Talking to Gods
« on: April 28, 2014, 08:29:53 pm »

Well, in the latest update from ToadyOne, it looks like we'll be able to talk to gods in Adventure Mode. But this is in Dwarf Mode section, you may be asking. Well, here's what I figure. Gods will probably be pissed if one were to have a hell hole of a town/fort that went against everything they stand for. So, think we'll be able to be besieged by gods?

One day, probably.  Or at least through any churches of those gods.

I'd be pretty shocked if that was true for the upcoming version though.  There is the question of just what happened with the demon sites of course.

I can't wait for the rich, flavourful experience of interacting with NPCs in adventure mode to be the basis of a religion.
But on a serious note, Toady seems to be giving all NPCs and entities more personality is definitely my favorite thing about the coming update.

I doubt gods will be able to assess you in that way with this release.. but it's certainly a step in that direction!

Same way you defend against any other siege I'd assume. Now, if said god simply reached in and smited words you'd be having a problem.

I'd expect gods to be a hell of a lot more difficult than a titan to kill. Perhaps the death of a god could cause any dwarves worshiping that god to be depressed?

With webbed cave traps, silly. Same way you deal with the other objects of worship that show up in fortress mode if you don't feel like losing a few militia.

If gods ever siege us, it would be FUN for sure. And quite interesting what they would send if it were to happen.

I assumed he meant "god-impersonating rulers of civilizations."

In previous versions, you could go to temples in adventure mode and join a religion. This granted you an extra conversation option - the ability to (attempt) to talk to the god that you worshipped. You would never get a response.

It may be now that talking to them will cause something to happen. It remains to be seen.

You could have your own Vivec.

This is exactly what he was talking about - in the current version (at least on Linux), trying to talk to an actual (omnipresent) deity causes the game to crash, though it's reportedly difficult to actually join a religion (back in 40d, talking to priests and asking to serve their cause would make you join the religion, but in the current version they act like normal quest givers instead).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Well, you could appease the god.  If the game gets smart enough to evaluate behavior against Spheres, "rightful living" would work.  Otherwise build temples and sacrifice?

As for what to expect from a god siege:

    • Water into blood
    • Frogs
    • Lice
    • Flies
    • Deceased livestock
    • Boils
    • Storms of fire
    • Locusts
    • Darkness
    • Death of firstborns

If you prefer a little variety in your divine retribution, there are procedurally generated hazards already in place for evil biomes.

It might be game-breaking to have actual deities show up and attack in person, unless the gods are incredibly underpowered relative to mythology.  Stargate SG1 looked into this a bit.  "They have to be fanatics to be worshiping a dead god."

    Edit: Fixed formatting.

Edit: Okay, that silly close tag just won't go away.  Maybe the 11th Plague is rogue BBcode tags?[/list]
