So we decided to do a Space Rangers 2 let's play...
« on: April 28, 2014, 04:07:39 pm »

But first i'd like to point out that... i have no idea what revision i'm playing!
I own the polish version called "Rebelion" the game had several revised versions called "reboot" and "revolution" while the vanilla game was called "Rise of the Dominators"... and from what i researched there was no english translation made for either "Reboot" nor "Revolution"... i kinda suspect i have "Revolution" since the titles are similar but frankly i'm clueless.

Also i tried downloading a fan patch to translate the game into english for the sake of the LP... but it kinda failed (i guess it needs the russian versions to work).

Long story short... the game is in polish and i'll do the translating of the important parts.

Now for the game itself.

It's more or less Elite... if it was 2D top down and turn based.
Your character is a so called "Ranger" who is expected to fight a race of insane AIs known as Dominators.
Of course you can also do everything but fight them (and its actually a good idea because they usually outclass you). Like doing missions for planets, ferrying goods between planets or shooting people ferrying goods and demand protection money from them.
Also planetary missions are chock full of text minigames... i remember one whare you were basically playing Euro Truck simulator... the text game... and you might end up in a text version of MDickies Hard Time  ;)
So there's quite a bit of freedom and variety here.

Ok onto the character creation screen.
Spoiler: Character creation (click to show/hide)

Soooooo what race/class i should play as?

1. SPACE RANGERS
2. Screenies and a lil storytelling work wonders
3. You should be an obedient little slave-tainer. But only to me :P

1. Anything except Civ 3. I wouldn't mind FO1 since I've never gotten into it, but I'm unsure how well it would work for an LP?
2. Pretty much what BFEL said, unless you'd have more fun doing video.
3. No idea! Obviously in X-Com games people can be "dorfed", but as for the others I'm not sure, apart from some general input when stuff gets built/named/designed. Or tactical advice, level-ups and conversation stuff in the Fallout games.

1. We've got plenty of XCOM LP's already, so I suggest either Fallout 1/2 or Space Rangers
2. Screenshots and some dialogue can work really well, so I suggest that
3. For Fallout, I'd suggest most decisions, except those that would get us killed, be left to the forumites, character creation included

Spehss Rangers. Too bad it's 2, though. The first's brutal difficulty would make things different.

Note that I voted Space Rangers because I have no idea what it is, thus making an LP the perfect way to showcase it.

OOH OOH, do this!

I've heard people say good things about the Space Rangers games, and briefly read about them, but I've really no idea what they are, so I'd love to see an LP on it!

Advice: Do an LP that's easy on you.  Since you don't have video capture stuff, screenshots might be easier.  They're also my personal preference, but whatever.

And you should ALWAYS listen to suggestions, he he he.  Note that you might have to educate us a bit before we know what to suggest.

Ok i'll do Spess rangers... i'll convert this topic into a SR LP threat a bit later (almost 4 am here).

Also i'd like to point out that I barely know how to play it myself.
The only time i got close to any of the 3 objectives (you are supposed to defeat 3 crazy AIs that rampage through the galaxy) was by pure accident and needless to say i got badly mauled.
Long story short... i'm going to die a lot no matter what  ;D

I take you are not going to use the reboot version then? (The main difference is an alternate main objective. You can win the game that way, the original way, or both)

Nope i only have the old vanilla one. In fact the one i have is in polsh and i just realized i can't change the language... at least they didn't give me an option in the menu but i'll take care of that tomorrow.

Play it on Impossible as a Fayan Mercenary. Grab those combat starting skills. Grab a rocket launcher, because that stuff is extremely useful for distraction purposes. Then grab a better shield system.

Clearly you need to be a Han Solo expy.

Human Corsair with Supah engines and Mobility/Charisma.

Rest is up to you :P

Also this game looks awesome and I want the English version somehow. (to buy for me :P)

Human trader with max shields.

"Why yes Mr. Pirate, my cargo does consist of missiles that are totally connected to an actually-working missile system.  Would I lie to you?  NOW BACK OFF...Glad they bought it, I'd hate to fight a space battle with nothing more than fifty packs of bubblegum."

Spoiler: Our guy (click to show/hide)
The game starts with a bit of text while the game loads.
I won't post a screenshot but it just boiled down to "We're boned so we started recruiting everyone and their dog as rangers, you won't get any support form the military because you're not considered to be part of the military. Good luck."

Then there's some more dialogue with a Feyan recruiter who says more or less the same and asks if we want to go through a tutorial.
I'm not really interested so i go to the hangar.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At the botton middle of the screen we can see 2 important numbers.
Our ship has 30 space left and we currently have 100 credits in our pocket.
The rocket launcher and shields i picked up at the start weight 60 so i can't really cram them into my ship... so i sell the grappler since it's only useful for picking up cargo and i don't have that much space anyway.
Since we dont have much in the way of money i go to the nearest planet hoping for a relatively easy planetary mission.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Note that i'll only post the governors face once since
1 - its on polish so no point in showing unreadable text.
2 - they're all the same.
The mission is yet another training mission i can turn down... this one however has some serious impact on the game and its ending (i doubt i'll get there anyway) but quitting it will mean you'll never get any mission like that any more...
Oh right... i didn't say what kind of mission it is!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's an RTS minigame similar to Z:Steel Soldiers with custon built robots.
Sadly i didn't take any shots during combat because i was too busy micromanaging the buggers since their AI is... of questionable questionable quality.

Anyway i passed the mission and got a module for gaalian engines that increases their speed... along witn repair costs.
Currently useless to me because i can't afford gaalian engines but i might get on in the future so i'll stick to it and probably stash it away on one of the planets for later.
I did get some cash tho so i can go buy my very own satelite and make them dig me some treasure on uninhabited planets!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And this concludes the story (and explanations) so far.

There is a translation for Reboot. For some reason, however, it vanished from Steam. It's been rereleased (again) as this
