Artifact FUN
« on: April 27, 2014, 08:45:35 pm »

I was reading the forum and admiring how some people magically create artifact axes and swords and then solo forgotten beasts and titans with it and i'm here with my 3 expensive pieces of fun.
So I want to know what are some of the artifacts in your games and what do you use it for! 8)

My game ended with a migrant wave popping the population right above 80 and around 532k worth of wealth due to some artifacts... :(

Artifact 1:
Perfect yellow spessartine
worth 48000, use:entertain useless arrogant pigs nobles if they ever arrive...which they never will since the fortress has fallen..

Artifact 2:
Ontakvucar, the native gold amulet
worth 90000, use: Also known as Snoop Dogg's Gold Chain, made by a 3 year old little girl in a fey mood.

Artifact 3:
Fubeggulnas Nidost Lecad, the native golden floodgate
worth: 204000 use: Bloody useless piece offun for the whole family. Use: Never got the chance D:

Well, my fort has a bunch of artifacts and one "artifact"; i.e. it's a sword named by a soldier. Other people will have far more. This is my fort's 6th year.

Use: Will be the final resting place of the queen if she ever dies.

Artifact 2:
Perfect Rhodolite
Value: 48000
Use: Just sits at the jeweler's workshop and does nothing.

Artifact 3:
Adamantine Goblet
Value: 734400
Use: Makes us richer!

Artifact 4:
Rope Reed Fiber Cloak
Value: 84840
Use: Armor for my greatest soldier because logic.

Artifact 5:
Adamantine Earring
Value: 18428400
Use: Makes us extremely rich.

Artifact 6:
Gabbro Scepter
Value: 9600
Use: Takes up stockpile space.

Artifact 7:
Green Glass Earring
Value: 55200
Use: Makes us richer by a small margin.

Artifact 8:
Adamantine Bracelet
Value: 90756000
Use: Makes us unrealistically rich.

Artifact 9:
Perfect Wood Opal
Value: 502800
Use: Sits at the jeweler's workshop but is actually worth something.

Artifact 10:
Schist Table
Value: 76800
Use: Sits in the queen's office.

Artifact 11:
Goblin-cap Blowgun
Value: 14400
Used by one of my soldiers.

Artifact 12:
Schist Armor Stand

Let's see. I've been going at this fort for like 10 or 12 dorf years. I have:

Artifact 1:
Perfect red tourmaline (named "The Savant of Fungi")
Value: 36000
Use: Sits in the jeweler's workshop, or maybe a stockpile somewhere.

2: Schist mug
Value: 6000
Use: none

3: Brown Recluse Spider dress
Value:11,220
Use: I don't even think anyone's wearing it

4: Gabbro Figurine of Dwarves
Value: 68,400
Use: none

5: Larch Earring
Value: 2400
Use: none

6: Schist Bracelet
Value: 14400
Use: none

7: "Climatebreaker the Griffon of Bowels", a schist amulet
Value: 38400
Use: none

8: Gabbro toy hammer
Value: 13200
Use: none

9: Cave Spider Silk Hood
Value: 20360
Use: none!

10: Schist Earring
Value: 38400
Use: none

11: quartzite toy axe
Value: 16,800
Use: none

12: moonstone ring
Value: 79,200
Use: none

13: schist weapon rack
Value: 2400
Use: in one of my noble rooms (I don't remember which)

14: Quartzite crown
Value: 42,000
Use: none

15: naked mole rat leather face veil
Value: 40,200
Use: none

16: Cedar Crown
Value: 58800
Use: none. What are we, elves?

17: Llama wool toga
Value: 18660
Use: none. We aren't Roman.

18: Sheep bone crown
Value: 61200
Use: at least it isn't wood.

19: lead mace; note: my first TRULY useful artifact.
Value: 38880
Use: I gave it to my militia captain. Or maybe commander. I don't know which. It seems fairly effective, though he wasn't a macedwarf until after I assigned it.

20: The Celebrated Virgin, a turkey bone pick
Value: 47040
Use: none yet. Maybe I'll make a bone squad or something.

21: a turkey bone battleaxe
Value: 88080
Use: see above.

22: tower-cap bracelet
Value: 36000
Use: none.

23: Sparklecradles the Coastal Bowels, a platinum crown
Value: 96,000
Use: at least it's platinum and not wood!

24: another perfect red tourmaline
Value: 36000
Use: none

25: cedar ring
Value: 32400
Use: none

26: a palm bed
Value: 4800
Use: it's in a noble room

27: sterling silver spear
Value: 59280
Use: it's a weapon. I will probably assign it to the next speardwarf that arrives in my fort...or maybe my militia commander/captain/whoever doesn't have the lead mace

28: brass buckler
Value: 21360
Use: I'll assign it to one of my melee dwarves probably

29: quartzite mechanism
Value: 92400
Use: Maybe I'll make a trap or something in a noble's room when they're grumpy. I'm afraid if I put it in a trap outside it'll cause bad thoughts if it gets messed up by a building destroyer

30: iron mini-forge
Value: 36000
Use: NONE. And it used up like 4 bars of iron that I was using for armor! Stupid STUPID POSSESSED DWARF.

Basically, be patient. And deal with the annoying woodcrafters/stonecrafters/bonecrafters. Eventually you might get slightly useful items. Maybe.

I'm sorry your husband had a strange mood and ended up making a useless trinket out of useless materials without gaining any experience in the process.

The "artifact" sword that my best soldier got attached to is made out of adamantine.
I strike that stuff FAST.
It helps when it's announced upon breaching the third cavern, which happens if you're lucky.

You don't have to worry about the mechanism getting destroyed by building destroyers... artifacts are indestructible.  This is always a problem if they are made of something flammable, as they burn forever and never get burned up.  The fuel they run on is your FPS.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

My fortress have a 40+ weapons and 40+ armors named by a soldiers.I don't count them, yet.But mostly useless copper and iron.
My champion and commander are full armored with adamantine. All of my 47 legendary soldiers used best (silver mace or war hammer and steel or adamantine for other weapon types if I don't count named copper/iron weapons and shields).

one artifact adamantine sword, a few artifact crossbows and one artifact platinum hammer.

so pretty good stash so far. annoyingly enough, that platinum hammer only has seven kills while the sword only has marginally more.

Remember that moods depend on the dwarves existing skillsets (and the highest skill they have!). This is important to note, as if the majority of your fortress is skill-less haulers, you will get a lot of basic things produced.

If you are aiming to artifact set an entire squad of militia, what you should do is set up some furnaces that produce low-end armor and weapons for trading. Set the smiths to be only for your haulers (under workshop profile). This way, when a mood rolls around, you now have a larger chance of it hitting a dwarf with a weapon/armormaking skill.

At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Take your time: it takes years for a nice pile of artifacts (that aren't necklaces and socks) to accumulate, I'm still waiting for that full suit of armor. *sigh*

I'm putting the list of artifacts from my current fort (19 years old, going to finish year 20 and do a write-up in time for the new version) in a spoiler, but the nicer ones will be bolded. I'm also keeping all the named-in-battle-crap off, unless it is a badass weapon with mad kills on it: shields named by the danger-roomed (for speed to combat booze-withdrawal: they never fight anything) Necromancers do not count.

This one's my most awesome so far:

Matrigoth, The Bent Crafts
"This is a cave spider silk thong. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of highwood. It is made from cave spider silk cloth. This object is adorned with hanging rings of cave spider silk and menaces with spikes of fungiwood. On the item is an image of Atir Channelshoved the dwarf in highwood."

At the moment my current (and best, so far in my time of playing DF) fortress has 10 artifacts:
a lignite quern (on display in the dining hall)
a chalk mug (good idea there Urist McCraftsdorf)
a leather bag (in the hospital to cheer up injured dorfs)
a cedar ring (well... it makes us more wealthy, I guess.)
iron chain leggings (worn by my #1 military dorf for obvious reasons)
goblin bone greaves (worn by my second-best military dorf for also obvious reasons)
an iron low boot (worn also by the #1 military dorf, fuck yeah artifact iron armour)
a grey chalcedony bracelet (again, more wealth)
an iron warhammer (given to my top hammerdorf, who unfortunately was not my best military dorf, and in fact wasn't especially experienced at the time, but he's getting better.)
and finally, a highwood chest, which was used to appease the baron who is a fussy ponce.

Edit: These artifacts have been made in-between the founding of the fort in 223 and now, which is 233- so roughly 1 artifact per year.

This fort has had pretty spectacular luck with artifacts in that 8/10 of them have been useful and 4/10 of them have been actual, useful military equipment. A chest-piece or a helm would have been better appreciated than the boot of course, but I'm not gonna argue with the results I've gotten.

I'll post deets on the artifacts later when I have the time.

3: Brown Recluse Spider dress
Value:11,220
Use: I don't even think anyone's wearing it

Not even dwarves are dumb enough to wear a dress made out of spiders.
