Also keep an eye out for trees or rocks blocking the path, and cut them down/smooth them over as necessary. A lot of people pave roads to the map edges to ensure they always can make it.

What's really annoying is when you embark on a heavily forested biome and trees grow that block access to your gate.  You have to pave a road or keep an eagle eye out, because the first indication you get is this message, which means "no caravan for you".
