Cheap dinner recommendations
« on: April 27, 2014, 01:11:54 pm »

It's the end of the month, and I have next to no money to buy food. What's the cheapest, best recipes for dinner you can come up with?

Actual recipes, or cheap packaged stuff that is easy to reheat and not completely lacking in nutrition?
Because I find Uncle Ben's express rice is really quite good for that. It only takes 90 seconds in the microwave to be ready, and if you wanted you could grab a tin of kidney beans or something to make it a better mean meal.
Not as good as actually preparing proper food, obviously, but then that is not my area of expertise.

Edit: Fixed a typo.

Actual recipes. That said, thanks Haspen! I've got some eggs, so I might do something potato-y.

Bean + rice.

If you can get eggs and flour, you can also make noodles from scratch.

Ah, alright.
Well, in terms of actual recipes, about all I know how to cook is scrambled eggs, baked potatoes and cheese toasties, any of which are pretty cheap and delicious. :) I'm sure cooking proper rice would be a piece of cake, too, I'm just too lazy to do so.
D'you have a sandwich press?

Yes I do! I made tuna melt sandwiches the other day, and that was a great experience!

Honestly, if you just sandwich press your bread and peanut butter, that can help it along substantially.

Excellent! Now you've got me craving a toasty.
I could live on those things. In fact... I have, in the past. >.>

@NinjaVector: Personally I prefer normally-toasted bread if I'm having it with normal spreads, but maybe that's just me.

I don't actually know what a sandwich press does ._. I assumed it was some kind of delicious toaster?

In fact, I have never tasted peanut butter. What's it like? Sweet?

We agree a Sandwich presse heats two sides of a toast?

@Vector: Umm, kinda... it's basically an appliance consisting of two heated plates of metal that you squish your delicious sandwich. So not quite a toaster, it ends up with a somewhat different texture. Also you can choose to butter the outside of the sandwich first, for a crispy (and less healthy) texture.

Fakeedit: Whoah whoah what. Never tasted peanut butter? Really? :o
Well, I'm sure there's plenty of foods I haven't eaten that people would be shocked to learn about.

It just isn't very common where I'm from, I think.

Bread and peanut butter are cheap, yet still nutritious. Buy a pot of honey at the beginning of next month. Use a little bit of honey on your peanut butter next end of the month. It makes for a very tasty, and less mouth-parching combination. Not much honey.. You can make a pot last for months. If it crystallizes, put it's pot in a bowl with warm water for a while to make it fluid again.
The beauty of honey is (real bee honey that is, not cheap sugar water with honey flavour), that it contains most of the 'trace elements' (minerals and metals) that our body needs, and can otherwise only be acquired from seafood, or specific vegetables.

Although a day or two of fasting a month isn't nescessarily unhealthy either. Just make sure you do keep drinking water.

Eggs + Rice + Whatever random Veg you have lying around = Egg Fried Rice. Soy Sauce optional if you wanna be fancy.

The chaps at SMBC did a fairly entertaining cooking show that actually gives good advice on what you can make for cheap, broke eats
