I might have just beat your record of getting own army killed by independents. And I think the indie Sorcerers are out to get me.

Some might not know so I'll tell you a trick.

If you script a commander to escape (better use a cheap one for this) and place them at the back.
You can use them to scout out what kind of indies there are if you attack the province. Just make sure that you do not lose the last province adjenctant to the one you attack. Or else you will lose your cheap expandable battle scout.

In this instance it was more an unexpected turn of bad luck than a bad decision (well, aided by slightly derpy AI which I guess I coulda mitigated by taking a heavier hand in setting up orders).

It also came with the somewhat amusing result of winning a battle despite losing my only commander in the battle.

I was kind of lucky during a bad event previous turn.

Got a barbarian horde event. And it triggered before one of my commanders moved from the province to a indie province. Lost some population and some chaff but trounched them.
