Hey,

I built a barracks with a shooting range and such and I have a squad of four dwarves patrolling my road. Will these soldiers take time off on their own to go spar or do I have to deactivate their military status?

You can tell them to stand down without deactivating them.  They won't take time off on their own, and if you deactivate them, they won't practice.

I'm not precisely sure where the stand down option is; I think I've gotten to it through the [m]ilitary screen.
