Arrows, colossus and other WTF moments
« on: April 25, 2014, 02:52:07 am »

So, while arrows in DF are quite overpowered, I encountered several instances when it was not quite so... And at least one example of just amazing lethality. [I don't use any mods that could have possibly affected it]

(sadly, lost the proof for another one, when bolt glanced off from the eyelid)

Yes, the same arrows that tear through bones and muscles like butter... Such occurences are quite rare, but still highly amusing.

This one actually made my day. I have previously read many topics about colossi being unkillable by archers and up till this moment that proved to be true.
Shot was made by a legendary+11 bowman, from a masterwork bronse bow. He is superior or high in most important attributes, but, as I know, it doesn't affect archery calculations to any visible extent.

Nice job! Though, I don't really like using arrows. I prefer simple rocks, dirt, mud... I did have a few ridiculous throw kills, but sadly no images.

Heh... Throwing is indeed ridiculous, up to the point when it is a clear cheating - killing objects with water, for example. Also, it is easily reproducible. I have yet to encounter other reports about colossus being shot to death, while killing it with a globe of blood/vomit/mud is not such a rare occurrence.

Encountered Giant Hedgehog. Poor beast didn't have anything beside upper body (no organs, just hair, muscles and arteries), despite its description saying otherwise. After lashing it for a time with my companions beating it with shields, I opt to just bleed it out. Eventually, this worked. Butchery provided full list of products... Well, I think it needs arena testing.

EDIT: Great, this is the way game imitates hedgehog rolling into an invincible ball of spiky death! When it is unconscious, you can hit any bodypart.

I'm not sure if this is a WTF moment or not, but recently (and by that, I mean a few minutes ago) I happened upon a clown in a cave. This one did not have any titles or anything so I, being the gloryhound I am, decided that it wouldn't be good enough to kill a titleless clown. No, I have to pad my kill list with legendary figures! To that end, I recruited five sacrifices to be brutally slaughtered - four close-ranged fighters and a bowman for the hell of it.

... It did not go as planned

That gobbo stole you glory.

Eh, at least he had been probably certainly eaten after death.

Another interesting moments for this collection:

In the frozen southern lands, occupied by goblin menace, my twenty-man party was ambushed by forty-something goblins - quite a normal number. After utterly decimating them, we moved on... And were ambushed by eleven gobbos of the same civ. I never encountered such small ambushes from a civ (they send no less than thirty) or even bandits (my fearsome reputation prevents any group with less then twenty members from attack)...

When we finally arrived to the city, I opted to train my companions a bit. Bodyswapped, went to dungeous... Bandits are friendly. Well, okay, attack... After some sparring with bandit, it became clear:
1) While legendary non-adventurers don't actually kill their brethren, it's fine. Bruises are fine, too.
2) If you hit someone repeately, he starts to counter. If you break combat - he will stop too.
Some testing is needed, but now it looks like a great sparring opportunity.

Judging from some of the dwarven science threads and my own testing with bronze colossi, all edged weapons that are capable of damaging them are capable of eventually severing their body parts and thus killing these hardy foes but I've never seen it down with an arrow before. Very cool.

Well, I bruised someone by throwing a dress at them.
I bruised their bone.
I also just stabbed someone in the foot until they died of blood loss. Must have hurt a lot.
In an unrelated note, I am killing every citizen of this human civilization.

I killed a fire imp by throwing a flaming *dwarf skin cloak* at him. The cloak was made using the Dwarf Chocolate mod, which I am trying out right now. The imps are from my own mod.

Yeah, the reason why my adventurer wasn't injured by the beyond scalding metals was because they're made of adamantine.

I've seen arrows sever human sized limbs in arena mode, so the probability is there, you just need 2x10^99 arrows

Well, decided to have a bit of fun with adventure mode (not Fun, mind you, I can't find dragons at this moment), and ended up with this bizarre statement:

"  it The Goblin Lasher in the body part, but the attack is deflected by The Goblin Lasher's small troll fur robe!"
For context, my swordsman companion sent him flying with an attack and I suppose it was some sort of skidding maybe.
