Paying for college without loans?
« on: April 24, 2014, 05:59:37 pm »

Hey all! With my scholarships and such I have 2913$ a quarter. Yay! However... my expenses will be about 4122$ So how do I make 1209$ without selling drugs, prostitution, or taking out a loan?

Do they have an on-campus student work program? I'd check that first. How about a tutoring center?

You'll probably need a part-time job. If you're in the sciences, I strongly recommend looking for laboratory assistant work - even if you have no idea what you're doing, you might be able to pull in a few hundred a month doing menial labor. Washing glassware and stuff. Looks good on a resume, and it pays poorly but will hopefully do the job. You can also look at picking up hours of work at local businesses, but that's gonna be something I can't help you with.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

That might work... I'm in Cyber Engineering which is sort of a new program for which I might not be able to get monies. However, if I'm significantly advanced or become so quickly enough, I may be able to code some of the other students' homework... Mmm.

I can't drive though, so that adds an extra challenge to off-campus labour. Although! I may be able to get certifications that allow me a chauffeur of some sort.

Don't cheat. It's fucking infuriating.

If you're good at coding, what you should do is pick up work on Elance (there's also often local web design/webpage coding stuff, on-campus). You can get plenty of money that way.

Google it! It's an online freelancing thinger that's actually pretty good in terms of offering reasonable wages and the like.

Would you consider robbing a bank? Depending on your location I might help pay for my college too.

I second Elance. I've made a bit of money off there doing writing. Put in a few hours a week of searching their ads and submitting proposals and you're bound to get some extra cashflow from simple jobs as long as you have a skill (writing, coding, graphics work, etc.).

Also, have you checked out Fastweb? I got a little bit of extra scholarship/grant money from there back when I was heading to school. There are a lot of contests and things for educational grant money that might seem like a long shot, but in fact very few people apply for them, so your odds are quite good. Usually all you have to do is write a short essay or something.

Kudos if you manage to get an education without taking out loans. The price of schooling in the US is just unbelievable. When I tell Czech people about it, they literally do not believe me (by law the maximum tuition a school can charge here is equivalent to about $500 per year), and I have to show them hard proof. I 'only' had $10,000 in loans when I went through school (thanks to scholarships as well), and I'm still paying them off 7 years after graduating!

As for Elance, sounds good.

Yeah, I looked at fastweb and a lot of the things I didn't do, but now I might actually consider cos I'm broke.

I'm hoping also to get a summer job/paid internship with either my shop teacher or a professional signs company. ( I have skills with CAD/CAM and running plasma tables. And if I pick up the internship I'll have resume padding and experience with much finer detail. )

I found a teen pregnancy awareness scholarship on fastweb. 7500$ for letting this organization have an awkward text conversation about teen pregnancy. Who among you are female, teens, really bored, and consider yourselves my friends enough to give me your phone numbers? XD No seriously though... I think I missed most of the good scholarships...

EDIT: Seriously, this thing's not a joke. Here's the link: http://www.fastweb.com/college-scholarships/scholarships/163004-7-500-teen-pregnancy-education-scholarship

7500$ is a lot of money...

I am pretty sure that you could, and should, send this to male people as well. Step one to doing better at college: read the directions carefully.

I'm a woman, but I haven't been a teenager in 5 years, so >_>
