You begin speaking to the dragonborn in Old suverian, asking about the situation. He gives you a long detailed summary of the sequence of events that led up to the creation of the Despairing Pits and about what happened to get you two there and what will happen there.
The Pits are an ancinet fortress, the prison portion is relatively new. Bneath every cell is a wailer, a kind of spirit that sucks hope from those nearby. You got caught as being part of The Defenders of Night, and so were sent there. However, there is a planned escape attempt once you get inside the walls. The key is a vital part of it, don't let the guards see it.
