I seriously thought of running a game similar to this, only it would've been closer to fizzbin, than CalvinBall.

Eight players gather around an aged stone table.  The hidden master of the game deals each of the players five cards.  The center of the table lowers as energy flows through the runes that designate the fields of play of each player. 

The first player to act was the fourth to arrive, summoning forth a
Matilda II into the arena.  A Pikachu is soon summoned, which would have eventually proven fatal to the Matilda thanks to its electrical attacks, if not for it being locked into a Debtor's prison from a $24 debt to Player 5, requiring the sum to be paid before the Pikachu is able to be used.  On the flip side, the Pikachu cannot be directly assaulted without a sufficiently powerful strike upon the debtor's prison.  Almost as if anticipating this, Player 3 summons up a self-describing dragon to the field of play as Player 7 summons up a crossbreed of a dragon and a human.

With such powerful moves around them, Player 6 decides to create a defensive perimeter upon their field using Bronze Daleks.  Player 8, rather than summoning, instead uses Foreign Aid to successfully contact aliens, giving the ability for 8 and <roll> 5 to draw a second card as long as the supply chain is not ambushed, which would give the card to the ambusher for that turn, if the ambush is successful.  The last person to act is the first to have arrived, having them open up an Metal Factory that may be used to draw an additional card or construct a Construct (defaults to additional card), unless assaulted by another force, who, if successful, would get the what was going to be gotten instead.

Minor notifications:
Maximum number of cards that can be played by one person in a turn is 3.
Cards with variants of 'Mutation' may target another player <or yourself> in addition to creatures.  If targeting a player, the player cannot be killed through the mutation.  Mutations are always randomized.
Guards and Walls prevent instant taking of spoils/prisoners.
Some types of cards (ex. Playing Cards) can have odd effects to get them to work in the format.
