I suffer one in every fort, because of the "everything want to kill you" nature of the game. But my previous fort was especially dramatic, and most importantly involved bloody and succesful vengeance from my part. Here's the story(caution,it's quite long):
I was forced to wall off the entire fort for 2 years because i had no good weapon and armor materials and i got two sieges one after the next.I lost many,MANY useful civilians to goblin and kobold ambushes, half my stuff and some babies to gray langure men, more babies to snatchers and the merchants ripped me off at ever chance. The humans attacked me because their merchants walked like retards to a goblin ambush.Overpopulation was sky high, with migrants arriving even after i had exceeded my population cap,and babies threatening to flood my newfound fortress.I even abandoned it for that reason. But the moment i truly snapped, was when a goblin siege appeared right next to my gate and overwhelmed me shortly after i had reclaimed it and finally started setting things in order. When i returned for the second time,i vowed to myself that the grey langure men,the orcs, the goblins and the humans would pay.And paid they did.
First job on the list, was capturing the grey langure men population and hunting down any survivors, since they were the weakest of my enemies.I formed a group of hunters and set a series of cage traps in the spots i knew the grey langure men appeared.Soon enough,a tribe came. The few that did not stepped in my cage traps were hunted down and butchered like animals(i had cannibalism enabled).None escaped.Soon after, another tribe came and suffered the same fate. And another. After that, they stopped appearing.I had captured or exterminated the entire population of the grey langure men in the area.I added the the PET_EXOTIC tag, chained them up and awaited till they had childred.I caught and tamed their children and atom smashed the untamed adults. From that day onwards, they and their descendants lived as slaves in my fort, used as guard animals in the caverns,as bait for goblins or as merchandise. One down, three to go.
The goblins came next, but this time i was prepared.I had set traps in the spot where their previous siege came,so i delayed them just enough so i could seal my fort and wait them out.Eventually, they left, leaving me with many captured goblins, and(more important) Cave Crawlers.I used the same procedure in the crawlers AND the goblins(after a bit of modding) that i had used on the langure men,and soon i had tame offspring of both. Then their leader came.A demon that had taken the form of a twisted camel. He approached my gate, losing his mount and 3/4 of his army to traps in the process. He cut down my dogs like they were nothing and smashed my gate, eager for dwarf blood. The gate was down, and the hold was ripe for the taking.Except for one tiny detail:a wall...He sat around awaiting to see if the dwarves would come out and play, but why would they?they had no standing army to speak of(yet).the mountain was fighting their wars.disillusioned,he broke the siege and left the map.he was never seen again.after that, many more goblin sieges came, but i had taken my time to produce steel equipment and train a legendary squad by the time they reappeared. They never seriously threatened my fort again.
With the humans,i was at peace at first, for i needed their caravan. But soon enough a similar incident with the previous happened, and they sent a siege force very soon. They had cavalry of giant dingoes, spearmen and archers.also, they knew some of my traps,so they were a hard enemy indeed.they killed some civilians and a hunter, and then the cavalry squad charged at the gates, leaving behind their leader and their mounts.with the dingoes gone,i gathered my remaining hunters and a hastily conscripted militia squad, opened the gates and charged at the survivors.i lost some dwarfs, but they were dead and i was back in my walls before the rest of their army could respond. The rest of their army was far away,so i had a safe perimeter.I reloaded any traps i could and made some new ones as well. Then i lured their spearmen to my new traps.i captured and killed them all. After that, the archers retreated I had won the battle.Their leader had the honor of being the first to test my new torture chamber.Miraculously, she survived.Next year, they sent another siege, but i had replaced all my traps and i had something resembling an army now(consisting of marksdwarves, and war animals,my legendaries were not created yet). The second battle was easier. After that, the sued for peace.I had won the war,and now had a lot of prisoners to "experiment" on.
The orcs(1vory's plugin races, not the masterwork ones) came some time after the goblins.Their first sieges were boring affairs.i captured some, and waited out the rest.but then their general came.i captured him, stripped him down and used him as decoration to my dining room.He died after a few years, probably from embarassment.Their shaman came next.i captured him too,and used him to try out a new trap, involving urightwooden meanacing spikes and a small walled room.a dwarf would raise and lower the spikes repeatedly, making whoever was inside the room look like a swiss cheese, but not killing him.his wounds were infected, however, and died some time after.their next siges, were easier, since i was defended by legendary soldiers with steel equipment.
