Dang it, Kansa, you took the best one!

Hmm, I'll take the Nautilus Pirates, over by...

Hmm, that sea down south of Kansa looks good, stick me around by that peninsula to the right.

Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

I'm pretty sure the top middle land is the volcano which gives bonus minerals and energy. And a suspicious patch of land at the right of it makes me think of the crater, which is even more minerals.

We could all form a coalition against you if that's the case.

Also, I think that there's mind worms so they may try to... murder you and eat your poor rotting caracas.

Drat. I just thought it didn't matter that much, except for proximity to other players (Never played Alpha Centurai before.)

Did I get lucky in my choice, or was it terrible?

As Nautilus you get the option between starting with 10 sea colony pods/10 colony pods/5 sea colony pods and 5 colony pods. Which would you like?

Also in Planet News:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There is room for 1 more faction on this Planet.

Depends. There are some landmarks on the map that certainly give you an advantage, but they're not needed. From the map you can make out the big landmarks, flat lands might be monsoon jungles (lots of good food bonus), desert dunes (very inhospitable lands, but free of fungus) or uranium fields (lots of energy bonus). What is most likely the pholus ridge and the garland crater is nearby kj1225, so the Angels should have some very good bases to work with (the landmarks giving more energy and more minerals respectively).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If you go south you can control those straits in red by land, if the Pirates don't beat you to it. If you go north you can control the straits to that bay, giving you regional naval superiority and total access to everything North that will likely fall under Morganite control. With a possible amphibious threat from the University and the Pirates, Morganites should watch their coasts :P
You also appear to be starting in the opposite end of a rainshadow, as the mountain will trap moisture in the basin your capital city starts in - meaning you'll get more food. Don't worry if you don't find a landmark, as most usually aren't that important at all and there will be more than enough random bonus resources to offset any such advantages lucky factions get.

The one to really look out for I feel is the Manifold Nexus, +1 planet rating and can't be found on the map!
