What time of day is it, currently? Otherwise, wait 3 am and do this:
We should hit about 0300 in the morning, as that's when most guards are halfway through the night shift and very tired. We hit with surprise and speed, trying to take the western gate quickly, and shell just inside the walls to prevent a counter-attack. We need speed on our side, as a long siege doesn't fit well with our "Raider" style, does it?

We shell the east gate to suppress reinforcements. Maybe deploy a few infantry squads as well - remember, that's all they have. We take our assault vehicles and mortars out to the western gate and breach it will cannon and RPG fire, then move in while the mortars provide fire support.

It will give us the most advantage of surprise, and works with our Raider style.

Wouldn't we get more surprise if we came in through the open gate without a sound? I doubt it's a trap, as that would involve them being tipped off, and if they were it'd be far more likely that they Lock the gates and prepare to repel attackers before they enter the fortress.
Besides, There's no point blowing up a door when it's wide open. If the garrison are out shopping or something and come back after we've taken the fort, it'll be a lot easier to hold it with all of the gates intact.
I'd say if we see no enemy movement we should send the militia to the open gate, and the light infantry with them to scale the walls to either side of the gate. We could even send a couple of trucks over behind them to provide covering fire in case it is a trap. Worst case scenario: some of the turncoats get gunned down, and we launch the assault on the western gate anyway. Best case scenario: We get into the fortress without damaging it.
If we do spot enemy presence or it's a trap, I strongly support either WhitiusOpus's or my plans for storming the western gate.
Of course, this is all theory for the future at this point. Let's see how the next turn pans out before deciding what to do next.

I would ask why fire can burn two men to death without getting hot enough to burn a book, but then I read "INEXTINGUISHABLE RUNNING KAMIKAZE RADIOACTIVE FLAMING ZOMBIE" and realized that logic, reason, and physics are all occupied with crying in the corner right now.

Actually, worst case scenario, they are alerted by our guys snooping, and manage to destroy them (since they're relatively unsupported) and close the gates. As well as preparing their forces for the fighting ahead.

I say we rush them while it's still possible. If we sneak in quietly it 1) goes completely against our style of fighting. See "Raider" not "Recon" units. 2) has the possibility of alerting them to our presence, and being able to prepare a better defense. Also, why would we be blowing the gate in, if it isn't even open? This just means we can get in even faster, and our surprise attack is even more complete.

But, like you said, this is just speculation for now. We'll see how our little waiting will work out, and if it changes anything, we adapt. If not, speed and ferocity is the best approach for us.

Your starting outfit choices were literally only to determine the types of units you would receive, you do not have to follow that choice to the letter and you can improvise where needed, in fact if you always attempt to stick to the term 'Raider' as describing you forces and attempt only to live up to that you will likely get wiped out.

Simple. Tell the main force to go in if they hear firing. End scenario: we lose a couple of expendable units and they gain literally one second's notice. Vis~a~Vis the possibility of not wastefully attacking a deserted position, causing unneeded damage to our future base.

Why are we attacking a fortress then?

Read the briefing, only the main eastern gate is open. The western gate, which you (and admittedly I) propose to storm, is shut. There is also the possibility, however slight, that it is a trap and I'd rather not send our main force straight into it.

If it gets everyone killed, yes it is.
In what feasible way can losing one of our worst units and giving the garrison literally one or two seconds notice get everyone killed?
Especially as, if it is a trap, they will have been tipped off about the attack in the first place, so we won't lose any advantage of surprise.

It's definitely a trap to get us to send men inside so they can close the gate on them and mow them down. The only reason a fort is open is if they're expecting someone.

You order your troops to hold their position, and watch the walls for any sign of movement as you attempt to wait out any ambush they may have in store for you. In the end your troops spend a few hours of waiting restlessly in the woods to find no movements on the walls though a few of your men to manage to make out something near the closed west gate, all around it there are a dozen or so signs warning of a minefield ahead as far as your troops can make out. Towards the end of the waiting as you rest in one of the trucks further back your comms officer runs up to you with the Empire on the line, they are requesting a situation report on your capture of Mezark Fortress. What do you report to them?
