Year 1, March
You order the village to be fixed up, cleaning the area and fixing the shacks and the dock. Work is successful! The village is not so run down as it was last month, and the cleaner village is much more likely to attract visitors. The dock is more stable, and can now house a large ship without rocking or creaking. The shack you live in is now much cleaner, and the cold nights don't seep in as much anymore. The smoking shack is repaired, and now can properly store fish if you have the extra wood. You organize a monthly market to sell to visitors. You don't have much to sell other than fish, but one or two villagers come from upstream, buying a few fish.

You check if your village has any skills for marketing. One of the villagers, In's, worked as a trader before he was sent here after they found out his true bloodline. He has a few ideas for attracting tourists, if you allow him to implement it.

You ask your steward to teach you how to read and write the new language. You can speak and understand it fine, but the common tongue is a little different. You start to learn the different words, but it proves difficult. You barely make any progress. Meanwhile, your steward requests to meet with you. "My lady, it is considered polite to visit your liege lord. Lord Tyras Camden holds great influence. This one could arrange for your departure south, if it please you."

Talk to In's about his ideas, get ready to visit our lord, and see if we could start a safe logging operation.

Year 1, April
You call for In's to discuss his plans. "M'lady, In's suggests that the market be known to more people. In's has heard you are heading south to meet the Great Lord Camden. In's suggests you tell people about our market on the way there and on the way back. By that time, In's will have set up more industry. Perhaps making use of the clay near the riverbed or carving wood, m'lady?"

You consider his advice. You ask around if you could start a logging operation to get some more wood. There is an axe or two that the villagers have, so they could chop a few trees down. They aren't experienced, but they will do as told. The woods are relatively safe, but there are some foxes and wolves deep in the forest. The trees are usable for many uses, particularly building. They could also be used for crafting goods.

Meanwhile, your steward has prepared a small boat to take you downriver to meet the lord Camden. The boat is small and rickety, and many times you've vomited over the railings. On the way you had taken stops to pay the tithes for travelling past the lord's lands. During that time you spread word of your village and market, and it spreads like wildfire. Expect some company when you return to your unnamed village. You finally reach House Camden's hold, a sprawling city with high marble walls and market stalls along the riverbank.

You are taken into a large castle, with guards around the gates and on the walls and in the towers. It's made of a smooth marble, and the paths leading inside has been planted of grasses and flowers. You are escorted by a unit of guards up to the lord's meeting hall. Inside is a big hall, with a warm hearth at the side, a fire blazing and warming you. You get seated next to the lord, a tall man, on the large side, with a greying beard and a scarred face. His eyes are somewhat large, and his tongue is forked. Next to him is his wife, Lady Camden, a woman with long, blonde hair and emerald eyes. Her ears are pointed and large, but covered under her golden hair.

"Lady Harkonnen. A pleasure." He kisses your hand. "I trust you had a safe journey. Our House is honored to have you as our guest. So, tell me, how may this highborn serve a pureborn such as yourself?"

GM Note: Roleplay go! And choose how In's will improve the market while your here: clay making or wood carving.

That last sentence... is rather ominous. I am not sure what a good response to that would be, or how much of that servile attitude is just a noble form of speaking... On the other hand, we are of the highest nobility by blood, and by a nobles romance, he truly might want to do us a good deed...

Either way, his hospitality and noble gesture is enough service for us. We don't want to leave a bad impression by mistaking his words, so lets play along with the niceties. Else, what we could need is knowledge. Are the lowborn always as behaved as ours are? Are there any specific rules we ought to adhere to while govering, or are there any trades that we are not allowed to ply under his rule - we do not want to unwillingly bring dishonor to ourself, or inadvertly besmearching his honour. Either way, we would be grateful if he would "show us the ropes".

If he truly insists on "serving" us a good deed or somesuch, I think something along these lines ought to suffice;
"If it is not too much to ask, how about we serve each other in mutual friendship?"

As for the market... I actually think that clay making is a more difficult task, but it could yield greater results in the long run. So clay making it is.

On that matter, I'd rather not mention the market to Lord Camden. What would we ever do if he truly came to that hick-market? I would wager it to be quite the embarassment for both parties involved...

"The lowborn can be somewhat rebellious at times in other worlds, but my House has made very sure that the serving caste on Torus stays serving." Lord Camden flashes a quick grin. "I've heard you do not know our ways. Let me enlighten you, my lady. You are expected to treat those with higher blood with reverence, but that is not a problem for you. The only good you are forbidden to trade are chainborn. Only the House of Chains has the sole right to breed and sell chainborn.

There are five castes: the chainborn, slaves who know nothing but loyalty and service. They have the least human ancestry in them, and sometimes you can't tell the difference. Then comes the lowborn. They are, essentially, slaves without collars. The halfborn are next. They make up most of the knights and lesser lords. Us highborn are priveleged. We own planets and command nations. The pureborn are the most powerful. Only the royal family and the High Houses can call themselves pureborn, and so can you."

You ask Lord Camden if he can show you the ropes. "Of course. I can offer you advice when you require. The prince, however, forbid me to aid you by giving you money, men, or materials." You ask him why. "He wants to test you. Noble children are taught to rule the day they can talk. You forgot even your name. This is your training, per se."

You say that serve you in mutual friendship. "Why of course! There is othing I'd like more." He keeps his eyes on you at all times, maybe studying you. "Anything else, my lady?"

Are there any factions within the different castes, or rather - is there strife within those of the same castes?

You said lowborn are like slaves without a collar. I presume one would be able to buy chainborns, but is the same true for the lowborn?

Are there any factions or races that are at war with humanity?

I think with that we have a good knowledge of what to expect. After that, I think thanking him for his time and efforts in teaching us - heartfelt, I may add - ought to bring a good end to the talk. Unless he wants to keep it giong, that is. ;3

+1 to this and clay making. The pottery will be useful for trading and storage.

"So tell me of your lands, Lord Camden.

"It is meager, if I do say so myself," he coughs, giving a small chuckle afterwards. "Torus V is relatively new. The land is ripe, but untamed. That is the aid I require: make Torus a truly formidable world, not some backwater rock!"

"Well, some lowborn are more 'liberal' than others. They're mostly the ones who've been recently turned to our ways, so they've not grown accustomed to servitude.

You cannot buy lowborn. Technically they are free men, slaves only to the kingdom. They've not many rights, but at least they've no chain around their necks. Chainborn are relatively cheap, and they are gifted from one noble to the next.

Well, there are alien bandits and raiders, but our system is relatively protected. The Royal Fleet was nearby recently, so the entire sector was guarded. There are also rebels and free slaves, who call themselves 'Freeborn'. Be careful of those maniacs. Don't fear, my lady. No one will rebel. I've seen to that."

You thank him for his time and efforts, truthfully, and you take your leave. You didn't know what he meant about seeing to rebellion until after you left the castle and walked down the road to the other side of the docks. You didn't see it before, but it is a line of slaves hung by their own chains.

You can give May actions or stay in Camden's city for a while.
