The end of Toady's to do list?
« on: April 16, 2014, 12:10:23 am »

:o   It appears Toady One has reached the final feature on his list. After that, all that remains is debugging.

Indeed it seems so.
GET EXCITED, FOLKS!

We have come a long way since the dawn of DF2012. Almost two years, TWO years since the last playable release has seen the public eye.
We've all been here this whole time (except for those who weren't) - some were playing the DF2012. Others were modding it. Others were telling the stories of their amazing adventures and others...Were waiting. With nothing but devlogs to stare at, they've been getting dreams of the new, of the unknown, of the new release.

And they waited. It did not come in 2012. It did not come in 2013. But it shall come in 2014. We've all been waiting for this very day, gentlemen, and soon it shall be the time. It shall be the time of never-ending tales, the time of amazing battles, the time of exploration, the time of wars and hugs.
It shall be the time of DF2014.

Wait, what? I thought that DF would not be feature-complete for another decade at least. What happened?

Toady got access to a time machine and got all the secrets from Nega-Toady, 10,000 years in the future on the game's full release. Its popularity is DWARFED
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
by Call of Duty 68,942. But it's still a cult classic.

You cannot tell from appearances how things will go. Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse than they are; yet without imagination not much can be done. Those people who are imaginative see many more dangers than perhaps exist; certainly many more than will happen; but then they must also pray to be given that extra courage to carry this far-reaching imagination. But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period - I am addressing myself to the Forums - surely from this period of twenty-two plus months this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of !!Science!! and fun. Never yield to time; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the lack of release. We stood all alone a year ago, and to many fans it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our threads, our epic legends, were gone and finished and liquidated.

Very different is the mood today. Dwarf Fortress, other sites thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these circles, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to play.

so, having only ever had to wait (wasn't even really waiting for them) for the small bug fix patches in the aftermath of df 2012, can anyone tell us (or just me) how long there might be between feature list completion and release?  If no estimate is possible, how long was such a period for df2012?

A better comparison (IMO) is the 2010 release, which had a bugfixing period of about two months:
It looks like the 2010 pre-release bugtesting started in earnest around Jan 23, so a bit over two months [until the April 1 release].  The testing team got copies on Feb 14.

I think in 2012 the release happened very shortly after feature completion but this may not have been typical. My best guess is it shouldn't be too long now.

Typicality is difficult to measure when there's only been four such long release schedules so far and only one of which is within 100 days as long.
