He's going to win by attrition anyways.
Not necessarily. You have yet to examine the arena.

We really shouldn't need to.

Well, look at it like this, if you are in a new area then you'll most likely automatically look around unless you are interrupted. Now, it's fine to make us look around for the cool stuff but at the very least things that you can notice just by taking a look from twenty feet away (or the other side of the area) shouldn't need a roll. Unless this was one of the goofy more minimalist games where making rolls for everything is more acceptable.

Looking around is a free action from what I can remember, though, so you should be able to do it while doing something else, provided you don't get interrupted. I recall taking 2 actions per turn with one being looking around.

It really shouldn't have to be an action you need to state though since you're always looking around.

Strangle the imprudent brute! Bonus points if done with the use of stick.

I second in that we must not spend time looking for... Well, obvious things. We all can see arena and its contents quite clearly. Some small items may pass unnoticed (with murderous people running around), but the probability of overlooking a grove of trees, anvil, sword in stone, etc. is close to 0%.

On the other hand, overlooking something in a cage or one of those arch walkways is quite high, especially if you're in the middle of combat with murderous people, especially while wielding a giant hammer.

+1 to abstracted surroundings/the GM wroth bandwagon. Mentioning 'cages' is fine if we have to make a proper look to see what's inside them. Weapon racks vs what's in them, columns & pits but not the spikes that adorn them, that kind of thing. We don't have (complete) tunnel vision after all.

Attack NAV. wonder why he has twenty health.
4. You attack NAV with your giant hammer, dealing (1d8) 5-1=4 damage.

5. You start strangling NAV with your stick. He is now Choking (takes 1 damage per turn.).

Back off and look around
4. You back away from the fighting. Auto-success. You look around. You are in a Coliseum-sequel arena, with four portcullises, one on each side. There are several archways up in the stands. There appears to be several chests scattered all over the arena.

Pick up the boxing glove bolas, put the rock inside one. Smash scapheap with it like a flail.
Auto-fail. Like I said, can't carry more than 1 object. Carrying something inside something else counts as 2 objects. Also you're choking.

Inventory from previous turn still applies.
NAV is choking.
Scapheap: 1/4 HP
                4.5/4.5 SP
Kj1225: 3/4HP
            3/3 SP
NAV: 14/20 HP
Sarrak:3/4 HP
          6/6 SP

Kyle takes a break to drop his hammer and run about the arena and grab an actually weapon/some armor.

Why did Scapheap suddenly gain 1 hp?

Smash Stranglers head with rock.
