Shooting at Jewish Centers

Cnn has a report on some one attacking and killing people at 2 different Jewish Community centers. The guy was in his 70's and has white supremacist ties

I'm pretty sad that we have yet another attack, but at least its not too bad compared to Breivik or Loughner. Also it seems that the guy was actually captured this time rather than committing suicide so it seems that we are gonna get a bunch of drama in court too.

Hitler's birthday is in 6 days. You know what they say: roll it up, light it up, annex the Sudetenland. >_<

At least the guy was caught. This is gonna be a fraught trial, methinks. Also, prepare for a flare-up of the gun debate.

I mean honestly, from an absolute perspective, it's a horrendous loss of life and a tragedy; but from a relative perspective, it's not that bad a shooting. I don't know if it passes the "national newsworthy shooting" threshold, which, as we all know, has increased a lot in recent years. I mean there are crazy shooters now fairly often, it's just they don't kill more then one or two. Plus it only has as many killed as the recent Fort Hood shooting. It's really the anti-Semitism that will matter.

Also, not only have they captured him, but he's in court on Monday? Which is today? Damn, that's fast.

In the American court system they have to set you before a judge pretty quickly after they arrest you as part of the whole no detention without trial thing. It's typically just a five minute thing where the judge sets bail, or in this case, the judge will probably refuse to set bail, and then sets a court date for later on in a week or something.

I think it's also where you set your initial plea of guilty/not-guilty as well... Although honestly from what I understand if you actually want to plead guilty, you want to plead not-guilty first so you can negotiate a plea bargain.

Plea bargain is fairly unlikely in this case. This is one place where the State prosecutor will be more than happy to spend the state's time and money to convict him.

Pretty sure plea bargains are mostly in order to get more evidence on other people as well. There just doesn't seem much to bargain here, unless say, he'd be eligible for the federal or state death penalty, but the prosecution could get him life in prison instead. Though given the guy is reportedly saying heil Hitler and all, he might just declare himself guilty in a flash.

It's something done to both get them to testify against other people, and to save the court system time and money. Trials tend to be a bit expensive.

I'm guessing they will probably offer him a plea bargain if they can, but I imagine it would be with really lousy terms for him. Though that's really speculation for me, I don't know all that much about the way the court system.

Apparently none of the three people he killed were actually Jewish.  The motive was still clearly anti-Semitic though so he'll face federal charges.

Yep. The son and grandfather were Methodists. I'm pretty sure no one has ever ranted about a vast Methodist conspiracy. I'm hoping the defense counsel doesn't use that to try and dodge this being classified as a hate crime, but I know they totally will.

Dude was gunning people down in front of a Jewish center and screaming Heil Hitler in the back of the patrol car, and he's the former head of the Carolina chapter of the KKK. I'd say it's a pretty safe assumption that it's a hate crime. Thing is, this isn't some guy who was below the radar. Dude had been on the Southern Poverty Law Center's radar for 30 years or more. He was in prison in the 1980's for planning to assassinate the founder of the SPLC, for God's sake. Though it was a short stint, because he rolled over on a bunch of other white supremacists and testified for the Feds. I suppose this is his way of restoring his "legacy" among the white power nutjobs before he dies (he's 73).

I don't trust the SPLC too much, because an attempted massacre at the FRC was inspired by their hate lists. Fortunately, the attacker was a total incompetent and was stopped by a security guard. So I wouldn't take being on their radar as evidence of evulness. Nevertheless, being a member of the KKK is evidence of evulz.
Overland Park is actually not too far from where I live, so this hits really close to home. I know someone who knew one of the killed.   I've actually been to this very community center before.

That is quite the irony that the guy will never be able to percieve. His line of thought was probably people at jewish center=jews, even if it was painfully obvious they arent (which wasn't the case here).

I'd like to understand the logic here, but I'm not sure there is any.

That's a pretty damn far stretch. The only people claiming that the SPLC is in any way responsible is the FRC themselves. I'd be happy to debate that elsewhere as well.
