Games with Ants/ where you can play ants?
« on: April 12, 2014, 07:46:17 pm »

So i finally picked up the Empire of the Ants book-series by Bernard Werber and that reminded me that there was also the game of the same name.

Now following question does anybody of you per any chance now a game where you can play ants? And i mean not Space-Ant Aliens, but normal ants.
What i have played so far/is known to me:

Empire of the Ants (the ancient and very buggy PC-Game)
SimAnt
The Warcraft 3 map by Bratcipheo

Dwarves are ants with no exoskeletons.

And beards, lots of beards. :P

More seriously, I haven't heard of that sort of game.

... also PC. And a few other things. But yeah, SimAnt and the WC3 custom maps -- there was more than one, by different people, iirc. -- are all I'm aware of. Unless you count that one war game style one involving insects that I've forgotten the name of. That'un was more than just ants, though, I think.

Wait, wait. There was... a thing. Gods alive, I can't remember what it was called. *googles* Ant War. Just... that. Kinda' strategy/sim-y, iirc. Think there was one or two tie ins to those 3d animated ant movies, too. Google finds stuff *shrugs*

What about Battle Bugs?

Granted, you do not play ONLY with ants. It's essentially a capture the flag type of a wargame with units that follow extensive rock-paper-scissors system. No diplomacy, resource management, just pure tactics. Ants are there as a most common soldiers, there are other bugs that fill different roles.

I think you can get it or various abandon-ware sites, at least I did years ago. Even though it might not exactly fit your criteria it's still a really neat game worth checking out.  :)

SimAnt was pretty awesome. For anyone who doesn't have it working on a modern computer, the DOS version is probably the best one to try to get (because you can run it in DOSBox and still use the mouse and such). The windows 3.1 version was good but is not going to work if you have a 64-bit OS. Amiga emulators, last I checked, are complicated to set up and run, and the SNES version won't have a mouse interface.

(I'd definitely play it again, but alas, my copy is the windows 3.1 version)

the SNES version won't have a mouse interface.

I believe (from memory) it was actually one of the few games to support the SNES mouse peripheral, which should work on any decent SNES emulator.

EDIT: The WC3 map doesn't have AI does it? It looked like fun...

It doesn't, no. Do note, however, that you were really jonesing for a game you could probably arrange one with folks here at B12. There's actually been a few WC3 rounds played over the years, some of which involved Ant maps.

There's at least one ant-themed miniature wargame ruleset. However, those ants are armed, so probably they don't fall under "normal ants".

Microsoft Ants, another multiplayer strategy game. It's a bit loosely in this definition though, since it's cartoony and such.

Sadly, I would just be tempting people for naught. Microsoft stopped supporting it 8 years ago, and it seems even the few ways people found to extend its life have fallen away.

Probably still some way of playing it, though, but good luck finding some people.

Command and Conquer Paradox Equation has an ant level if I remember correctly.

Both one where you fight the ants (and it is a secret level why I don't know) and one where you are the ants (but is rather glitchy)

Honestly paradox equation is a really weird mission pack expansion... but in many ways I love it.

Remaking the manual textbook would be too much for companies nowadays.
