Well, my anticipation for this game just increased tenfold.

It certainly solves the persistent problem Civ games have with the early game. Barbarians just aren't enough of a real threat, hordes of hostile alien wildlife are another matter. It also provides for an interesting gambit: attacking another player while they're busy with aliens, at the risk of being eaten by aliens yourself for dividing your forces.

It sounds like it will not be very playable with multiplayer. If random events like barbarians will influence the players power so much, then there's no multiplayer balance.

Civ games have never been particularly balanced in multiplayer.  Isn't it all about the stories rather than the competition?

Ohh my big time. It is especially hilarious when you have civilizations whose entire gimmick is being able to thrive in exactly ONE environment... and they aren't even particularly good at it.

But that is only sort of. Civilization's design philosophy seems to be that they will balance 5 civs and pretty much ignore the rest. It isn't unusual for one-three factions to just outright stink, or for one to be overly-specialized but rock on exactly one kind of map.

Don't most civ and civ-like games offer a ton of customization though? One would assume that it will be possible to tune down the alien activities if one so wishes.

I'm sure this will be an option - even if it's not at first, I'd bet serious money that it'd be patched in mainly because people will demand it for competitive multiplayer.

It does look a lot more promising I just really hope that they can be creative enough for the end game.

Those who join us need only give up only half of their humanity—the illogical, ill-tempered, and disordered half, commonly thought of as 'right-brain' functioning. In exchange, the 'left-brain' capacities are increased to undreamed potentials. The tendency of Biologicals to cling instead to their individual personalities can only be attributed to archaic evolutionary tendencies.

Hey now, wait a minute, I joined up for godlike power through technology, the leaflet said nothing about removing my evolutionary tendencies! My sexy, sexy tendencies.
