How should I go about advertising a gaming community?
« on: April 11, 2014, 03:18:04 pm »

Over the last day I have set up a number of game servers and It occurred to me that It may make sense to place them under one name in order to get better traffic to them. However, I have no idea where it is allowed to post about these communities(I.E. reddit etc) and where I will get my head torn off about it. So I have decided to ask you where I should because having been on the forum for a while there isn't much of that on here. But just to be safe I am posting here.

tl;dr Where is it OK to post about a gaming community and where is it not(including bay 12).

If you want to look at the community click here

And yes, the logo was made in microsoft paint.

Best bet's to post in each individual game's topics, except in places where self promotion is frowned upon (IE, Reddit). Usually the official forums for games, or the Steam forums, are decent places to advertise.

Otherwise just host decent, consistent servers and you'll be good. People tend to gravitate towards larger capacity servers that stick around for a long time and offer a decent amount of variety. Unless there's a game mode or map that's completely terribad, you should try to include as many options as possible. Games like Team Fortress 2 thrive on custom maps, so look for some of the fun ones to include in the roundup. Have a decent moderator system, consistent mods, and a decent voting system. Give as much control to the players as possible, and focus on making it fun and open. As you provide a good experience, the community will grow over time.

At least, that's something I look for in a server. Your mileage may vary. Expect to hang out in your own servers quite a bit. Running this many servers well is essentially going to be a full time job, but if there's interest and you do a good job your community will grow on word of mouth alone.

I know there are sites to list your game servers on (Gametracker, and Game-Monitor seem to be the largest, or what google prefers in search at least) There are probably multitudes of smaller game server lists, so yes, it's possible to advertise without pissing off players :) Just look for niche sites to post your server in, and if you keep ramping up the quality, and keep up with demand, you can at least break even maybe someday. But yeah, everything Knight of Fools is saying is true as well - always remember that you have ridiculous amounts of competition. There's very little wiggle room in pissing off players when there's thousands of other servers to choose from, so it's best to be at least consistent in your administration - the core playerbase you have right now will definitely appreciate that as things grow.

Also, start looking for good, chill admins. You will need them. Don't think about it as a minor workload increase - think of it as a geometric increase in the number of times you have to step in and calm people down. You might not even notice yourself doing it at this point, because for a smaller group it's second-nature, but it will be a lot more work to have more players, so you need to consider your other moderators on this as well.
