First Paradise - Interactive Fiction RPG
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:25:15 pm »

First Paradise is an interactive-fiction/classic roguelike hybrid featuring three different modes of gameplay. The game is presented through an ascii/unicode interface which requires players to sort and differentiate visible items based on the characters on their keyboards. First Paradise is an ongoing project, it's linear mode is told in "sequences" set in a hard science-fiction universe. In the upcoming major release (v5.0), players also have the opportunity to generate their own ship, hire crew and strike out across the universe in search of truth or trouble.

First Paradise is an ongoing project.

First Paradise takes place hundreds of years from today, across universes; it's story told between distant planets by distant people. All seen through an ascii/unicode interface and volumes of interactive-text sequences. Trapped in-between their goal and the many worlds that represent home; this is the story of a post-human's spiral towards catatonia in the vast emptiness of interstellar space.

Trying it now... I might like it...

EDIT: Seems going into the key bindings on the Windows version doesn't let you exit as I've tried all the buttons I have available to exit it :P

Just thought I'd mention that.

And it begins!  We might end up having to change some of the bindings or rewriting unsupported page refreshes etc. The engine underneath it supports SDL as well as (N/PD)curses so oddly these things happen.  Funny enough, this problem is non existent on Linux and Android.  It's gross, we appreciate the feedback though.

If anyone else is interested, feel free to break the game and send your reports to support[at]gnovahex[dot]net to be listed as a tester on the site if you wish it.  You can find more details included inside the manual.txt file, inside the .zip.

Alrighty.

On another note, A small map would be nice in a general 'This thing is here, that thing is there' thing would be nice as it took me a few minutes to find the bridge when it started.

Next thing is that it felt like more of a go witness this thing currently. I may be doing it wrong and only getting half the expirience, but currently it just seems a bit empty and just 'talk to this guy, see the thing, learn about what's going on kind of, then get sent to cryo.' Of course I'm only on day ten currently, so who knows what else there is :P

* Iceblaster admits the second criticism is probably not as valid as it is just a demo and this techinically is an alpha.

Before I post, I must ask. Is it intended for the player to walk onto the 'wall' tiles?

EDIT: Also, a [Press any key to continue] would be a nice thing when it's on the whole 'Day X' and the title hehe.

Part of the problem is that missing lower interface. Unfortunately that fell out in the port over as well, this is one of the things Chris will be working on correcting over the next few days.  Here's an example:

First Paradise v3.3 for Windows is up on the website today with no day limit short of the expansion free ending(s). The fixes in this version include:

  • Lower display visible
  • Alternate exit (x) key binding set for the "controls" menu.

Unfortunately the colors are still wacky though, I'm still digging through the API source to resolve that. Also, we're accepting character submissions for First Paradise: Nights.  For those interested, to begin you create a character using an outline (below) and submit it to stories[at]gnovahex[dot]net where we'll review it.  If he/she fits the context we'll respond to gather further information and work with you on stats, symbols and placement which once complete would effectively make your character a part of the game's main storyline. Our theme for this expansion is exoplanet exploration.

Right now we're working with our artists on creating short graphic novels to tie in with each expansion (since you know, it's all ascii). Notably though, these will only feature the game's main "cast" where a user submitted character might make cameo style appearances if permitted to do so by the original author. That's about it, enjoy.

FAQ:
"Why can't I find coins for the vending machine?"
- That's because we hid them.

"Why can't I progress past Day 10?"
- Try getting some rest.

Character Submission Sheet:

Name:

Age:

Gender: (not at all limited to male/female)

Origin: (tell us about yourself, keep it short but not sweet)

Post-Surgical Wetware Rejection Syndrome

Definition

Post-Surgical Wetware Rejection Syndrome(PSWRS) occurs in less than a quarter of patients having undergone artificial implant surgery. People with this condition experience strong feelings of disgust toward the affected area as if it were a foreign or perhaps implausible component of their body.

Causes

PSWRS is due to the patient's organic brain continuing to sort messages from transistors set in place to replicate the functionality of nerves that originally carried impulses to and from the affected area. Without the capacity to accurately determine the origin of these impulses, additional implants to the cerebellum are required.

Risk Factors

PSWRS is more common in adults than in children. Other factors that may increase your chance of developing PSWRS include:

  • Previous damage to spinal cord or peripheral nerves that supplied the affected area.

Symptoms

Post-Surgical Wetware Rejection Syndrome may cause sensations of:

  • Shooting, stabbing, piercing or burning pain.
  • Numbness, tickling or cramping.
  • Extreme spasms or involuntary movements.

Diagnosis

Following the procedure, it is important to tell your engineer if you experience pain or other sensations. Earlier treatment generally improves the chances of success.  Medical tests vary based on the amount of artificial implants present in the patient's body. These can range anywhere in between reporting discomfort to running a neurological debugger on a cyborg's BlueBrain.

Medications/Treatment

Your engineer may recommend the following to help with your symptoms:

Biological

  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Antipsychotics
  • Opioids
  • Muscle relaxers
  • Pain-killers
  • Cloning

cybernetic

  • nano-stimulants
  • VR Motor Therapy
  • BlueBrain Re-synchronization

For those who follow, we are still in the process of developing our next big patch which includes a multi-user component.  The above screenshot was taken directly from the MUD expansion. Ideally, players will be able to interact by picking up jobs provided by a variety of sources.  The Employment tag here simply states that my character is currently contracted to Westhause Corporation.  My S/N (serial number) is simply my first and last initial followed by my server mark, so if I was the third person (ever) to create an account I would be CL-3, this will help us track bots, spammers and duplicate accounts.  Character S/N's are permanent upon signup. Another primary function of S/N's is to search a database for friends and send crew invites etc. Of course, nicknames can also be used for these purposes and they help players easily identify each other during chat sessions.

My Status here indicates that I am on-site, this refers to my character being present aboard the Orbital Station which serves as a rendezvous point for ships/crews before or after deployments. Your Replica number effects your ability to find work, this essentially serves as a death counter or times-deceased. Finally, a player's model number refers to his/her body type, for the sake of a windy post I'll refrain from going into more detail about this now.  However feel free to follow us on Twitter for updates and news. The current version is also available for Windows(v3.3) and Linux(v3.8 ) here.

This is a gen I let run through without being fully functional. This should give you an idea of what we're going for in the next release with our non-linear game play. The schematic window will fill in with a diagram of the ship as it is being generated.

I downloaded 4.0 and successfully interacted with the doctor, and then I moved the cursor onto other things and they disappeared as I passed over them and when I tried to do something else I just ended up with the cursor visible on an otherwise black screen and can't do much.

Hmm yeah we've had a problem with the color balancing for Windows.  Pressing the 'i' key again exits interact mode causing things to clear up.  We'll be working on that.

So today v4.2 was cranked out for Windows! We can finally say that it can stand on it's own next to the Linux and Mac releases, both of which were much less bug-ridden in comparison.  We fixed some issues with the colors bleeding into other things which was a Windows exclusive problem to begin with.  There were also some changes in aesthetic to compensate for some features that were native to Linux which was a double-edged sword. On one hand some of the things we added does serve to make the Windows differ from the Linux(native) release which in a broad sense might be for the best since this is usually what happens with ports.  Just like the Android version will probably be much more condensed, shorter but much more complete in terms of bells and whistles.  I doubt a mobile version will include Voyager and Expedition mode but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Windows v4.2(stable) changelog

[=] Resolve odd color_pair bug with windows build.

  • Update support pages.
  • Added a text queue to "Continue" during day progression.
  • Replaced star animation with text during day increments.
  • fixed some issues with unrecognized unicode.

First Paradise 4.3(Windows) is a real thing.  Massive teaks to the engine in light of a possible graphical skin.  The "color_pair" issue has been completely resolved.
