So I've noticed something.

On the main page of the forum, waaaay down at the bottom, is the box of "Users Online".

Down in this box, it shows all the users that have been active in the past 15 minutes (provided their profile shows if they are online or not.)

So I noticed that my name was down in there, and when I hit refresh, it bumps me back up to the front of this list.
The thing is, the forum counts simply refreshing the page as being "active".

I noticed that I was far from the only person who's name was moving, but even when checking "show new posts" (Not to be confused with "show new replies" which only shows the ones that you've replied in.) that nothing new was popping up.

So, I know that people will (like myself) just sit there, hitting "show new replies" until something comes up, I wanted to point this out.

You can actually see who's doing that down at the bottom of the main page.

So I guess the whole point of this thread is to ask, how many of us are out there?
Are you one of those people that keep hitting "show new replies" until something comes up?

Did you know you were being watched??!??

Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

And now we watch as the people who are testing this out get bumped to the top of the list

For some reason I am finding this incredibly amusing.

I wonder if the same criteria for being active is what they use to determine time spent online.

I don't know, but it might be.

Someone who knows how it works may come by and explain it.
Hopefully.

I've now realized that I've spent maybe the past 10 or so minutes hitting refresh and watching this, rather than being productive in any way.

Actually, refreshing does not bump you to the top of the list. You can try it yourself by refreshing on the main bay12 forum homepages.

Things that do count as activity are opening new pages, and such.

Refreshing "show unread replies" (which this thread is about) appears to be counted as activity though. But yes, refreshing the main page definitely isn't.

It definitely counts sometimes. I just opened the front page and was at the top of the list, then refreshed and was a few spaces down, then I refreshed again and was back at the top.

Yep, just did it a second ago and it seems to work.

I think it's best to end every search with related tags such as bomb and anthrax just to make the NSA's job easier.

This is why I have "Show if online" unchecked.

Heh.  I do that sometimes, when I'm bored.  Just refresh pages.

I always thought it put people down there in the order of recent posts made. I guess I wasn't entirely wrong, but that's still really strange. I wonder if everyone sees the same list?

I would imagine so, just at whatever time you happen to refresh.
