Whoa, I absolutely love the graphics. It's beautiful. Imagine a Total War type game or a fantasy RTS with a gfx engine like this one.  8)

I was running out of time so I thought I'd just skim the video. Ended up watching ALL of it. I'm really, really excited for this game. Kind of Cossacks 2: Napoleonic Wars but focusing only on battles - which I guess is both good and bad. Cossacks 2 definitely had this whole strategic/logistic layer to it that I enjoyed, but the combat on UG:G looks just amazing and so very, very tactical!

I do hope they get some procedural content or dynamic campaign in, rather than just "go through missions". I think your troops are persistent across missions, so let's see... :)

It looks good and I want to get excited, but I still don't trust Darth to not pull some drama and freak out :(

Uh oh - so far I had only heard good things about him, and that his mods were supposed to be pretty awesome?

Looks almost the exact same as Sid Meier's Gettysburg! from '97. That game is still a ton of fun, and in my eyes, this game will still have to do a LOT more to be better than that game. I mean, even the graphics style looks similar, and gameplay looks to be about the same.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Maybe future videos will show more exciting details, but right now, I'm wondering why I would spend money on this when I still have a working copy of Gettysburg! on CD.

I would say thats a pretty unfair view to have on him.

Pretty much he was the best and most well known total war modder and he was not invited to the most recent total war modding summit...which is a pretty shitty deal considering who he is. He gave up modding for total war games after that...

This of course is the short version of the events and actions taken...but that is the main bit of it.

He's a highly polarizing figure. In the Total War community he's pretty much considered either the ultimate modder or the embodiment of everything that is wrong with TW's modding community. He is a good modder (or at least a good packager, depending on your perspective), but his claim to fame is his multiple very public "retirements" and flameouts.

I have no doubt that he can make a decent game if he wants to, but in my mind he is one of the most likely people in gaming today to pull a Phil Fish.

I'm excited, despite the talk going on in here it's hard to argue that he hasn't delivered in the past.

Yeah, I agree with Urist and honestly, we just looked at 22m of really solid gameplay footage.

Like I said, I'm still a little worried about the higher-level gameplay, and am really really hoping for some sort of more dynamic campaign, but we'll see.

I'll have to look around for Sid Meier's Gettysburg! It looks interesting, though definitely not quite the same as this one. There is something about having hundreds upon hundreds of soldiers on screen. I've been itching for some musket line battle action lately, though, so perhaps this :)

And again, if you can get your hands on the Cossacks 2 series, it might tide you over for a while! :)

Ya, I would like to see some campaign, although the website mentioned that should this game go well they hoped to expand the series to other conflicts. (hopefully napoleonic and crimean wars!) As far as hundrends upon hundreds of soldiers on screen I totally agree, doesnt hurt that the game has a different art style then most games.

I read a few lines about it as well, about them then having other battles or some "what if scenarios". I got the feeling that they still meant largely static alternate history scenarios, or DLC for new campaigns which are also mostly static.

To me, dynamic campaign generators are the difference between playing a game it through once and you're done, and essentially unlimited replayability. Especially if the maps themselves are randomly generated, which I guess is harder when they get as complex as they do in modern games.

I'm mostly excited for the AI. The AI looks really challenging.

I would expect nothing less...after all, his mods in the total war series were AI centered...and he did a damn fine job. My only concern and curiosity is if he has failed elsewhere...I would hate to see it but time will tell if this is just a glorified AI tactics and battle simulator with a pretty shell.

Yep, also I really want to see a fantasy themed game using this engine. I would spend $50 on that one or more even. While we are at it, I am wondering that what stuff can be modded in this engine. Somehow I have a feeling that not much, if anything at all, since it's Darth's game afterall... :D
