Are Titans "lesser" than Forgotten Beasts?
« on: April 09, 2014, 04:47:41 pm »

Usually whenever I see reference to procedurally-generated non-clowns, people reference Forgotten Beasts. Is it because there's something more Cthulian about them? Is it because Titans are more likely to be killed during world gen due to being on the surface?

As far as we know, Titans and Forgotten Beasts are exactly the same thing - the only difference is that Titans live on the surface (and are fewer in number, made fewer by being hunted down during worldgen) while Forgotten Beasts live underground (and tend to remain unnoticed until you start your fortress).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Like Quietust said, FBs and Titans are pretty much the same. Only real difference is a player is far more likely to encounter a FB before they ever see a titan.

You also need to take into account that, despite them being exactly the same thing, a forgotten beast is far more dangerous due to factors.

A beast pumping out gas underground in tiny corridors is much scarier than one above ground where it's well ventilated, acid blood getting all over your ore deposits and/or central routes, and plus it's harder to get a good shot on the ones that have dangerous syndromes underground in uneven caverns.

On the other hand, a flying or swimming above ground titan is still VERY dangerous.

Aside from the fact that they attack above ground where most fortress's are very well defended, Titans actually tend to be more dangerous than Forgotten Beasts. Although they are generated in an identical manner the difference is that the Titans you encounter have undergone natural selection since they live on the surface and have generally been attacked over and over again during the course of the centuries that have passed. Thus the weakest Titans tend to get culled from the population unlike the forgotten beasts that wait safely in the depths. The longer the world history, the more dangerous the Titans you come across tend to be.

Titans are just Forgotten beasts that had not been forgotten during world gen. A kind of REMEMBERED BEASTS or UNFORGOTTEN BEASTS.

on the other hand, they may arrive badly beaten up and barely able to walk, slither, crawl or ooze forward, you never know

This is my experience. I've had my fair share of forgotten beasts, and they've visited all my forts. Never seen a Titan yet, even though I only play very short, sometimes short, histories.

I had a titan earlier tonight, and much to the credit of what I was saying earlier, it got vaporized immediately. I have not breached the caverns, for obvious and well-placed fear and forgotten beasts.

I think my caves have between 6-8 forgotten beasts running around in them right now. I think I got so many because I haven't been killing them off.
I don't know if any of them have left the map yet.
Right now my caves are sealed up with no way for the beasts to get out of them.

Do you run regular world gen? Titans begin normal world gen very few in number. They start as the rarest of all the great beasts of the world and only become rarer with time. Given the random nature of titans many are actually freakishly easy to kill such as those made of mist ect. and thus they are killed off quickly during world gen. Maybe one in ten or twenty Titans live up to their name as civilization threatening monstrosities. This means that in a medium world there may not even be a single truly dangerous Titan that spawns since the world starts out with a little more than a dozen of them by default.

You can fix this in advanced world gen. If you want to see what a true Titan can be made of I suggest spawning several hundred of them using the custom parameters and then running a medium to long history. This will cull the weaklings leaving you with a good chance of running across one of those types of horrors worthy of the being worshiped and feared by various civilizations as a God. Be warned since they are randomly generated in nature with no check on their final power you can end up with something visiting your fort that is almost invincible like a flying behemoth made of living stone that blasts your dwarves with instant brain melting dust that contaminates everything.

If forgotten beasts will never leave the map then I must have a lot of fun waiting down in those caves for the 1st miner who breaks a way into them.

I wonder if I can use them for something...

I think i've only seen one titan for every 10 FBs. So they're pretty rare. I've always feared a flying titan coming around and fucking up my fort. I have vast containment procedures for FBs, but my only plan for titans is to close the gates and pelt it with tons of bolts.

I think I should build something so that I could lock a titan in my 100-150 tile long underground path that goes to my main gate.

edit: right now I got a web shooting Titan outside my fort and I don't know what to do about it. I don't have much in the way of combat dwarfs built up (about 1 good sword dwarf and 3 or 4 more in training).

I do have adamantine in use and being mined. so far I have about 4 sets of Adamantine armor (one armor part for each body part) and 4 Adamantine swords made.

Edit: goblins appeared and killed it.
