O_o
...We're seriously discussing gender-names with hurricanes?

Reword: There's a point that gender-names invoke some kind of mystical death toll higher than the other?

Rewording again: This is silly. :P

But serious question here: Why is it that there are some stereotypes that are...said to exist but in all actuality are just crazy beliefs to the populace (or the majority)? Like that one thing on women <3 bad boyz...like saying all women do. :v
Or is it all...time-centric(?), as in a belief that only makes sense in that one period of time.

"Ice cream causes polio"?
It does, in fact. It's got something to do with how polio cases are becoming more common as urban centres expand, and ice cream sales are booming in a similar pattern.

A lot of it varies with times, culture, fashion etc. Like with most stereotypes there is some core of truth wrapped in a lot of bullshit in there. If you say instead that women prefer men of higher or equal status, you're closer to the truth. What signifies status varies, culturally and individually, it could be intelligence, wealth or dominant ("bad boy") behaviour or something else.
So it's not like all women want bad guys, but they don't want to be your new mommy either (well some do, but exceptions confirm the rule).

well some do, but exceptions confirm prove the rule

Prove (which is the only valid word here), in this case, does not mean "confirm". it means "test". The exceptions test the rule, and help us to refine it.

Sorry, not gender related. Just me being angry at misused idioms.

Just to point out, there are two readings of the "exception that proves the rule" thing, neither of which has an obvious case for being more correct.

1) Exceptions that 'test' the rule, as above.

2) Exceptions that 'emphasise' a general rule. For example, "we play all music except rap." The exception of rap music suggests that literally anything else will be played, as otherwise it would be listed as another explicit exception. So rap is the exception that proves that any (other) music will be played.

In this case an exception that is not listed would not prove the rule so much as discredit it. So saying "all x are y" and then being shown an x that is a y is not an exception that proves the rule so much as one the disproves it, no matter how much people might want to retroactively carve out a space for it and make it the former.

Yeah, I think that's the best example (Sunday parking prohibited) and makes infinitely more sense compared to the abused usage, which is a complete non-sequitur.

No, the idiom was being used to mean the wrong thing.
I meant to use it the way it is meant to be used, I just used a wrong word because "confirm" is a possible translation for the German word I had in mind.

Actually maybe wikipedia is implying that the idiom is used slightly different in other languages (as "(the) exception(s) confirm(s) the rule"), but since it could also be translated as "exceptions prove the rule (to be true)" I guess it's the same.

I've been lurking this thread for the past week or so. Once Loud Whispers, Woobmonkey, and Gervassen left the room (ie anyone who thinks feminists are anti-men) everything got so much more calm and rational. Props to those who've withstood the bickering.  :P
