We have longswords currently. What would be a step up from that?
It all depends on the skill of the person using. Basically, someone who trained with a shortsword will be better at it than they will be with a claymore. They can use the claymore, but they'll preform at a lesser ability until they learn how to use it through combat or practice. And different swords are good at different things. A shortsword it pretty good for stabbing, whereas a saber's best for slashing. Longswords are good for all-around damage. So is a broadsword, and that's a bit heavier than the longsword. Claymore's very damaging but requires two hands to use. It can also be a bit hard to carry around.
Uh, okay. Lots of information, thanks. Anything you want to check out, Mel?

(((...Why did you have to notice that?) Because this is the capital city, Limor. You were just in one of the outer areas when you arrived. (Just go with it, okay?)))

Show him Mel's sword, and ask him what would be one step up from that. Or if it could be improved.

On a side note, briefly wonder how the small place you woke up in suddenly became a town large enough to have districts.
((I meant add it as a thing under tired))

((I see all.))
Okay, what kind of longsword does Mel have? Could we get one made of something better?

((You both have iron longswords at the moment. If material isn't specified, assume iron unless it makes no sense for the item to be iron.))

Could we get one made of a better material? How much would they buy the sword for? If we can't afford a better one now, but could after selling her sword, sell her sword and buy a better one!

Do you have a steel longsword?
I think we have a few, yes. One would be 6 silver.
How much is six silver?
Last I checked, it was six silver. Sixty copper pieces.
How much would you buy my sword for?
Sorry, Tomart, my master, says that we shouldn't buy weapons or armor from people. It's cheaper to just make it from the raw materials.
Could you improve our swords as they are now?
Can't make any improvements other and just sharpening the blade. You'd have to go to an alchemist or enchanter for that.

Hm. Ask about iron armor?

((Why did you have to go and mention ponies, Dawnstar?!))

If no such thing is affordable, which it won't be, go see about getting a bit of treatment for your wounds. Or, if sleep = healing! give Mel three more copper and head to an inn.

((Sleep = Healing! Though certain, larger, wounds can't be healed by just sleeping.))
Okay, how much is an iron cuirass?
Same price as the steel longsword.
Alright, thank you.
Bye.
Heading outside, you hand over 3cp to Mel. You then enter the inn. The smells make your stomach rumble, and you realize that you're getting hungry. The innkeeper is a young man. He's walking about serving various drinks and meals to the patrons. You inquire about a room.
Hey, how much is a room for the night?
Hi, it's 8 coppers a night.
Okay, here.
Great. Dinner is available now, and breakfast will made in the morning.
What is the dinner?
Some roasted potatoes and a bit of cooked pork. Five coppers.

I'll take one.
Me too.
Alright, find a seat and I'll bring it out.
As you and Mel are eating, a woman sits down at your table. If not for the bow and quiver she wears, you would have mistaken her for a court jester. Her tunic is green, without shoulders, and she is wearing long purple arm sleeves. Her pants are black and incredibly short, with a purple sash around her waist attached to her quiver. However, her eyes are strangest of all. One is a vibrant green, and the other is a light purple. They seem to alternate between the two colors. When she speaks, she has a soft but firm tone.

Hey! How are you? I saw you enter a few minutes ago! You look like adventurers!
I'm, uh, I'm good? Who are you?
I'm Vin, of course! But the real question is, who are you?
My name's Jon, and, um, this is-
Mel. What do you need?
Well nice to meet you both! And don't worry! I'm not going to rob you! I want to join you!
Why would you want to join us?
We can't offer you much money...
Oh, money's not a big deal. And you're adventurers, right? I've been wanting to get together with a bunch of people and just travel and loot and do adventure stuff! It'll be much more fun with a group!
I suppose so...
Great! This is gonna be great!
Okay, well, anything important about you? Any murderous tendencies?
Heheh, only occasionally! Oh, and I'm a guy.
...
...
...Uh, what?
Don't worry, it doesn't happen too often.
Um, the other thing.
Yeah, I'm a guy. I just look and sound a lot like a girl.
You and Mel digest the revelation while eating their meal. After finishing dinner, you all head to the room you were given. It's a fairly average room, with four separate beds. There is a wardrobe next to the door.
((Thank Kevak for the trap.))
((Lots of talking this time. More about Vin will be revealed as time goes on.))
