Reclaiming NPC forts. Pouring magma on a forest. Making site claims. Wiping out sites that don't submit to my rulership. The bugs. Elf sites. Dwarf sites. Goblin sites. Conversations. Multiattacks.
Hell, I'm looking forward to everything! Except the bugs.

so many bugs
Don't know about you, but I derive a great deal of pleasure from trying to invent new ways to break the game.

Personally? Sieges + climbing/jumping and multi-tile trees. I was never much of a farmer, so the new crops... not so much. I may also give adventure mode another go.

The update with digging attackers will totally ruin traps, so I'm hoping that one's as far off as possible.

It won't ruin traps, you must have the traps distributed across the fortress rather than in the one place the invaders will enter.

I think you made a spelling error here.

I see you haven't been paying attention to the devlogs for the past month.

No, I didn't mean those traps, I mean the big ones with magma and/or flash freezing, triggered cave-ins, etc. If they avoid areas where their buddies have been killed, a minecart shotgun will be a one-shot affair, and that'll be no fun at all.

I'm looking forward to the fact that what you do can actually have an effect on the world going forward, beyond just killing everything.

It will not ruin your fortress design, because the digging will be optional (as in you can disable the invaders digging abilities)

Ability to dig (optionally, default on)

Personnally, i can't wait for when the enemy will be able to actually conduct a siege and put your defenses to a challenge instead of sitting outside of your walls then leave.

As in the current version the only way to really have a battle with the invaders and your fortress defenders is if you intentionally lower your defense by leaving an opening.

That's really what i'm looking forward the most of the next release ( 2014 sounds a bit too optimistic ) , along with the improved adventure mode

I see the digging enemies as an incentive to have a military/creative traps.

The military way would be to seal up just to buy some time for the military to get ready, and the lowering the bridge.

Developping new tactics would be a must. Has anyone tried motti tactics yet?

I'm anticipating the following:

JUMPING
It turns you into a projectile VOLUNTARILY! Yay!

CLIMBING
Finally, I don't have to look for a 45 degree slope to climb a mountain.

RUNNING
Toady mentioned something about running in the devlogs, right?

ROBBERY
It will be fun to let bandits ask for my stuff, only to turn around to an ambush.

Wasn't there something about mounts?
Finally, gorilla sasquatch !!giant sperm whale corpse!! riding is possible.

I'm actually really looking forward to the coming additions that involve making enemies more dynamic and intelligent. The ability to scale walls and jump is a cool step in that direction.

When the time comes that enemies can burrow or are smart enough not to step through the same hall of death they just saw 6 of their friends get cut to shreds in, then it will just be time for us to start designing multi-barrel mine cart shotguns and magma sprinkler systems with many outlets. Plus I imagine when more realistic sieges are added it won't be every enemy that employs advanced tactics like digging. I'm sure zombies will always be dumb as dirt for instance. I'm really looking forward to the day when a rickety trap made of sticks is no longer capable of slaying gods and something as simple as a dirt wall or raised bridge can no longer completely foil the greatest armies on the planet.

I think there will always be a place for dumb cannon mine cart fodder enemies like the zombie legions but there really needs to be something in the game that poses a more dynamic and real threat to established fortresses. Perhaps in addition to digging there could be something along the lines of an incorporeal ability for rare and powerful night creatures like wraiths etc. that would allow them to simply pass through walls. It would be a great random secondary skill for forgotten beasts and titans as well.

Digging invaders are going to be amazing. Intelligent sieges are another thing that are going to completely break all of these existing strategies we have to deal with invaders, so I'm looking forward to all the crazy threads that come up as a result.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Biggest thing I worry about with digging sieges is the off chance that the siege in question actually starts in the caverns (definitely an apparent possibility) then digs up into your fortress, and the player has NO idea that it's even coming until it's inside and killed your dwarves. Or an ambush starts out on the surface, decides it's better to dig to your doom, and again, without warning gobs are in the dining room.

But with all the new plants, I'm looking forward to seeing how the new farming is going to work. I'm also interesting in the new movement options, and the fact that history still advances after game start is going to be interesting too. Hopefully it won't kill FPS too badly on my POS machine.

RUNNING
Toady mentioned something about running in the devlogs, right?

We even have the raws for them.

Code: [Select]
[CREATURE_VARIATION:STANDARD_BIPED_GAITS]
   GAIT:type:name:full speed:build up time:turning max:start speed:energy use
use NO_BUILD_UP if you jump immediately to full speed
these optional flags go at the end:
         LAYERS_SLOW - fat/muscle layers slow the movement (muscle-slowing counter-acted by strength bonus)
STRENGTH - strength attribute can speed/slow movement
AGILITY - agility attribute can speed/slow movement
         STEALTH_SLOWS:<n> - n is percentage slowed
it would be interesting to allow quirky attributes (like mental stats), but they aren't supported yet
   [CV_NEW_TAG:GAIT:WALK:Sprint:!ARG4:10:3:!ARG2:50:LAYERS_SLOW:STRENGTH:AGILITY:STEALTH_SLOWS:50]
   [CV_NEW_TAG:GAIT:WALK:Run:!ARG3:5:3:!ARG2:10:LAYERS_SLOW:STRENGTH:AGILITY:STEALTH_SLOWS:20]
   [CV_NEW_TAG:GAIT:WALK:Jog:!ARG2:NO_BUILD_UP:5:LAYERS_SLOW:STRENGTH:AGILITY:STEALTH_SLOWS:10]
   [CV_NEW_TAG:GAIT:WALK:Walk:!ARG1:NO_BUILD_UP:0:LAYERS_SLOW:STRENGTH:AGILITY]
   [CV_NEW_TAG:GAIT:WALK:Stroll:!ARG5:NO_BUILD_UP:0:LAYERS_SLOW:STRENGTH:AGILITY]
   [CV_NEW_TAG:GAIT:WALK:Creep:!ARG6:NO_BUILD_UP:0:LAYERS_SLOW:STRENGTH:AGILITY]

And if you're wondering what the ARG things refer to:

Code: [Select]
[APPLY_CREATURE_VARIATION:STANDARD_BIPED_GAITS:900:675:450:225:1900:2900]

People are talking about digging invaders, but this won't be in the next version. And AFAIK an adventurer can not ride a creature yet.
