Can some people stop with ad-hitlerums? It's getting really tiring.

Yeah, we've been talking in circle.

Heh, Mainiac was mocking the hitler people.

And he should stop mocking people as a substitute for argument, as a general rule.

Back on topic:

Ukrainian forces have been mounting successful attacks in Sloviansk. Putin has warned the Ukrainian government of "consequences" for this reason.

Also:

Russian forces keep messing around off the coast of Scotland while the RAF and the Royal Navy take forever to get up here. If we actually had a defence policy that was geared towards the UK rather than faffing about on globetrotting adventures then maybe we'd be better prepared.

Also a couple of Tupolev bombers came very close to Dutch airspace, prompting Dutch, Danish, and UK fighters to be scrambled.

I don't know what Putin's game is here, but its a damn dangerous one. One itchy trigger finger...

The Russian bombers were reported previously, and in that article it was stressed that it's unrelated to ukraine & instead routine business- testing military response time & all that.
I'm not inclined to doubt that, and we likely do the same thing.

Also, Owlbread, the planes that intercepted came from Fife. What else could they do?

And they need to test NATO's response time why exactly?
This is the kind of chicken games that were standard during the latter Cold War. There's no valid reason for them now.

With independence, Scotland wouldn't need to worry about Russians using our waters to test British response times. I feel like I'm caught in the crossfire here.

Polish newspapers reporting Russian troops starting maneuvers near the Ukrainian border; Russian 'defense' minister says it has to do with 'situation on the Ukraine', to be exact, with 'Ukrainian government giving green light for shooting civilians'.

Link (in Polish): http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomosci/1,114912,15838564,Czwartek_na_Ukrainie__Operacja_antyterrorystyczna.html#MT

This does not bode well.

Indeed.

Eh, to normalize it so as not to show their hand when they are considering something?
Again, we likely do the same thing.

It's not a game of chicken, they were flying in international airspace and therefore had every right to do so.
Buzzing the US destroyer was much more offensive.

Armed men taking over government buildings and shooting at people are not civilians, They are combatants, insurgents and as such are fair game for taking out and throwing the survivors into prison.

((This isn't considering the delicate case that we have in Ukraine))

However, this is just yet another attempt by the Kreml to gain popularity for the case.

So apparently many militiamen are from Russia and Belarus etc, they're just there off their own back. Or so the story goes. It's a shame that the article calls Krasnodar Krai the "traditional stomping ground of the Cossacks" too; one wonders if they'd have a similar attitude to somewhere like Tasmania or parts of the USA.

Controversial Ubykh genocide discussion aside, I was interested in the perspective the bearded fellow took on things. He had absolutely no inclination towards the message put out by Putin's propaganda machine; that these guys are "Ukrainian" and want to be "Ukrainian", they just don't want to speak Ukrainian (dirty peasant language) and would much rather stay Russified. The fellow clearly states that he sees Donbass as "Russian land" that should be "taken back" and he clearly describes the ethnic Russians in Donbass as "Russians". Screw autonomy, this guy wants annexation.

EDIT:

Yeah, this is getting much worse:

Russia has ordered military exercises on Ukraine claiming that they have been "forced to react" in order to stop this "military machine" to protect civilians. Crimea all over again.

I feel like NATO should do 'military exercizes' in Ukraine to at least sort of occupy the vacuum.

Where's Ukrainian Ranger? He hasn't posted around here in a while....

"military exercises ON Ukraine"? I think you missed the important word "the border".

Also, mainiac, now is probably the time for those "real sanctions" to arrive?
