I have a song from a Scottish Marxist singer called Dick Gaughan. I think he wrote it back in the '80s.

This is it being sung.

Quote from: Dick Gaughan
Glittering shop windows, sparkling commodities
Aladdin's caves of treasures, consumer's paradise
Patrolling the windows with clubs and uniforms
Security guards protect all this wealth

And they call it "Freedom", they call it "Being Free"
They call it "Being Free", they call it "Freedom"

Single woman with three children, living in a suitcase
Scared to go out at night, scared of pushers and muggers
Got no place to cook, lives on fish and chips and cornflakes
The doctor gave her valium, said it would help her nerves

And they call it "Freedom", they call it "Being Free"
They call it "Being Free", they call it "Freedom"

Across there on the other side, behind the "Iron Curtain"
People rise and go to work, they've got no unemployment
They've got nobody dying cause they can't afford to eat
They've got nobody dying cause they can't afford a home
They've got nobody dying cause they can't afford a doctor
They've got nobody dying cause they can't afford to live

But they don't have "Freedom", we're told that isn't being free
We're told that isn't being free, we're told that isn't "Freedom"

So just remember if you're starving, you've got the freedom to starve
And if you're homeless, then you're free to have no home
And if you can't afford a doctor, well, you're free to die of sickness
You're just exercising free choice in the free world and having freedom

There's a lot of people in this thread who come from countries that were once "behind the Iron Curtain". What do you think of the sentiments in the song?

Yeah, the only right-wing extremist here is me... I feel lonely :(

I thought the right wing people were the ones that wanted to go to Russia? Obviously you aren't.

I have no clue about what's going on with left-wing and right-wing in Ukraine, but I swear I read somewhere, this thread probably, that it was the right wingers that were going to Russia.

Basically both sides in Ukraine are very right wing, but pro-Russians like to portray themselves as Socialists or "anti-Fascist/Nationalist" because part of their "Russian" identity is very strongly Soviet. Ideas like "Communism", as it was in the USSR anyway, are seen as being Russian in nature. Pro-Ukrainians like Ukrainian Ranger will sometimes talk about this being a fight against "neo-Soviets", not Russians.

From my perspective both Russians and Ukrainians are being very Nationalistic. Nationalism is not an inherently right-wing ideology but it is being treated as such in the current conflict by pro-Russians.

That would explain my confusion about right wing here since I didn't see UR as being right wing, and yeah I know nationalism isn't inherently a right wing thing.

UR is actually right wing because he's a naturally socially conservative guy. I hope you don't mind me talking about you in this way, Ranger.

There, there, UR, I'm a centrist where I live - and that makes me a middle-right guy among students... And I can very well understand your nationalism. Owlbread once called me an European Nationalist, after all~

I'm going to do the smart thing here and disengage. This isn't a hill I paticularly care to die on.

Then you get cities like Paris where you should basically just kill yourself already.

You won’t have to think anymore: it’ll be just like having fun!

Now, now, UR, you are not alone! I'm as right-wing as it gets without going around and coming to the left again. :)

PLACE TO EDIT LATER: I'm going to work in a sec, but I've actually found quite nice evidence of 'highway tanks' to post later. Not saying it is a good idea by no means, but than again, I can say that about more than a few ideas Soviets had about war.

That above being said, I'm not blindly following every word Suvorov writes; he might not be the best source ever. But he is not afraid to tackle topics nobody really wants to tackle, and actually beginning of operation Barbarossa is one of those, and his explanation is in fact one of the most convincing I've read. Stalin/Hitler situation was kind of a Mexican stand-off, that's for sure.

So events happening today:

Geneva Conference, once again discussing diplomatic options to solve the Ukraine Crisis. From what I've heard, Ukraine will be listing "evidence" for Russian involvement. Russia will obviously deny it all.

Putin AMA on Russian TV at 12 pm Moscow time. Any accusations will obviously be denied by Putin.
