Use broken stick like a minesweeper, returning to the safe path whenever drybones start grasping at the stick. If any come out, give them a solid THWACK with your hammer.

If you're facing them, and in a corner, they can't attack you from weird angles and will be blocked.

[6] You run over to the corner with your shield up, bowling over the cucoos in your way. You slam into the wall and your shield gets stuck in the wood. [3] A cucoo tries to take the opportunity to scratch you but you chop it in half before it can get close enough. You grab the shield with both hands while still awkwardly holding your sword to try and get it out of the wall. [6] It pops free and you fall backwards, planting your sword in the planked floor and pinning a super cucoo's wing in the process. It squawks angrily, trying to remove it's injured wing.
