..selling the ideas increases the chance that the Merchant will be able to offer them to you later in his shop.

If you sell an idea, there's a better chance he'll be able to permanently offer it as an item for purchase in his shop later on.

You can try haggling, however the merchant hates people questioning his ability to appraise and as the self-proclaimed penultimate judge of quality (in anything and anyone). If you fail, it will impact your relationship with him.
