IIRC they repurposed asteroids and other debris by growing onto them and launching them at other planets. The bioship would then either rain Altered from orbit, or if it crashed, spew any survivors out to consume the carcass, and begin the attack.

How were they ever a threat to mankind on a measurable timescale then? Did they grow organic FTL engines or something?

Remember, the altered wars lasted centuries.  And the biggest problem is that they were practically universal at the start- one gene hacker didn't just figure out apotheosis at once, they all did, at the same time.

Further, they had he whole 'from a single cell' thing going for them, and either created energy from nothing, or could do things like shapeshift at 100% efficiency.

The facts that they couldn't use space magic or jump points (Or refused to, which has some rather terrifying implications) were the only advantages the nascent UWM had.  If it weren't for those, humanity would have never survived.
