dwarfs not using stockpiles or bins
« on: March 31, 2014, 01:58:37 pm »

so im running in an environment that i don't want to start a new game from but im encountering several curious problems.

1) dwarves wont use bins to store stuff in stockpiles (have 8 empty bins in my furniture stockpile) but my finished goods stockpile is full of items not in bins(as is my weapons and armor stock).
it was the same with my cloth stock pile 'till i purchased some cloth (1 full bin of ropereed cloth) from the elves and now all my cloth is in that 1 bin

2) some stock piles are not being used at all. (animal stockpile has none of the filled or empty cages in it and i have plenty of both)

3) have a tame animal in a cage, but i cant get it out

anything you guys can think of to try to help me fix this would be awsome

Check the stockpile settings (q) on the finished goods stockpile.  Make sure bins are allowed, and make sure it is not set to take only from links.  It should be set to take from anywhere.

Meanwhile, look at the bins that are sitting in the furniture stockpile.  If they have a (#nn) in their descriptions, then they are assigned to the stockpiles that have those numbers, and simply haven't been hauled there  yet.

Finally, note that only one empty bin at a time will be assigned to a stockpile, in general.  So, your goods stockpile might have one empty bin assigned, which is being hauled to it already.  Or, the empty bin was hauled there, and then after it arrived, a dwarf grabbed it and is running around gathering up goods with it, after which it will be returned to the stockpile.

Hmm... not enough information here.

Again, make sure the stockpile is set to accept items from anywhere.  It's really easy to accidentally hit a while looking at a stockpile, which toggles it into "accept only from links" mode, without noticing.

3) have a tame animal in a cage, but i cant get it out

There are lots of ways to remove a tame animal from a cage.  The easiest is to designate a pasture zone somewhere, and then assign the animal to the pasture.  The second easiest is to construct the cage as a building, then q it and un-assign the animal.

thanks for your help.

1) they allow bins and are set to "Accept form anywhere"
the bins on the furniture stockpile do not have (#nn) in the description (and i understand that #nn  are variables)
there are no empty bins in the stockpiles

i have also tried to remake the stockpiles but that does not seem to help fix the problem.

3) tried the first one but the dwarves refuse to make any attempt to pasture it. (civilians not set to burrows)
i will try the second one next time i get to put some time into the game

I was always under the impression that furniture can't be stored in bins, since IIRC empty bins not in use are furniture too, and it would be weird to be able to matryoshka-doll them (notwithstanding that some have been able to matryoshka-doll minecarts). I might be completely wrong about this though.

Like Viivrabe said, usually only one empty bin at a time will be assigned to a stockpile, so it does sound like the 8 bins in your furniture stockpile are because they're being stored there as bins, not because they're being used as bins.

You should probably set bins to 0 in the furniture stockpile settings, and raise it to something else than 0 on the others.

@above: I think that wasn't the question here - unused bins count as furniture, so they are _stored_ in the furniture stockpile. The bins in that stockpile merely mean the fort has bins in reserve that aren't in use as containers yet. (Your point about furniture not going into bins is quite right as far as i know, but, well, beside the point.)

That they're not in use yet may mean that the dwarfs are still busy re-organising the stockpiles for bin usage - they'll only assign a new bin to a stockpile if they pick up a new hauling job there and cannot find a bin with leftover capacity. Stockpiles will slowly fill with bins, and how fast this happens depends very much on how many haulers are working there. If you're short on haulers, it'll take forever. You might need to wait longer or allow hauling on more dwarfs.

3) this normally only happens if the cage is inside the pasture. The dwarfs check the locations, find the creature's x:y:z coordinates are inside the pasture and decide the job's already done and they should have a drink to celebrate their diligent work. Try to set up a new pasture zone and make sure the cage is outside of it before assigning the animal there. And make sure both pasture and cage are really accessible.

Make sure you haven't accidentally reserved all of your bins for use in jobs - open the Stock[p]ile menu and make sure the "Reserved bins" number is set to zero. If it's nonzero, then the game will set aside that many bins and prevent them from being assigned to stockpiles for storage.

The neighboring option "Reserved barrels" behaves the same way, but it's actually useful because it makes sure you have containers into which you can brew drinks (I'm assuming the option includes both barrels and FOOD_STORAGE tools).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

ah thanks so much that is what happened it was set to reserve bins.

now i just have to figure out why the cages (full and empty) are not going into the animal stockpile
