DarkDXZ rants about: April Fools' Day
« on: March 31, 2014, 07:09:48 am »

So April 1st AKA April Fools' Day is coming up really soon (read: tomorrow or today by the time you read it) and I just realized something that I hate about that day.

"Hate? Dark, why do you hate the day about jokes, pranks and other kinds of fun?"
Good question. April Fools' Day is indeed a nice day, but one thing that really turns me off about it is that people make those pranks/jokes/you-call-it just for the sake of doing it "because it's April Fools'" and they usually end up being more annoying than funny.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good joke every now and then, but when they're all forced because of April Fools', it gets rather annoying after a while and said jokes feel really forced and done, again, for the sake of doing it.
It may make me sound really antisocial, but that's how it is. Plus I can't be more antisocial and I already am, so...

And so that's why I kind of hate that day, because it likely will make me more annoyed by bad jokes than happy by the good ones.

Feel free to disagree with me, but that's what I feel about the 1st of April and so am more concerned than I probably should be.

Everyone here gives a passing acknowledgement to the existance of April Fools day, but otherwise goes on with business like usual. What you described sounds like much more fun.

To me, every day is trolling day.

Thing is, a good joke/troll/WHATEVER is the one you don't see coming.
Since you can expect a whole legion of more-or-less bad-to-okay jokes on April Fools', they all kinda lose their meaning.

What pisses me off even more is that my classmates are going to troll me like no hell tomorrow (they already do every single day, and it's only going to get worse).

Sounds like the "jokes" you're complaining about are actually bullies using the occasion to bully you some more. My best suggestion: organize some massive pranks aimed at the teachers or something. Friends of mine managed to tear a car apart and re-assemble it within the classroom. :p

Everyone knows the best April Fools Day pranks happen on the 2nd anyway.

Anyway...

OP, there is something you must do, then. Be the change you want to see in the world! If there is a problem, it is your duty to become the solution! You must create the most hilarious, the most awesome, the most memorable and joy-giving prank ever conceived, and carry it out to perfection.

You have one day. Godspeed.

I don't think I've ever actually done anything on April Fools Day. Or had anything done to me. Some friends tried to prank call me once but I was asleep prior to that call and unable to really do anything but grunt at them. Actually that wasn't on April Fools day, either.

When it comes to pranking on April Fool's Day, I usually try to keep it fun, and make sure the victims don't feel so victimized (or basically, wanting to kill me after the prank is done). Of course, setting up the pranks and such is becoming more of a chore as I get older, but dismantling others (we tend to setup plenty of traps) is half the fun as well, especially when you out-think the prankster, and reset the trap they made for you, and redirect their own prank at them.

Of course, there are also some classic/traditional pranks we do every other AFD. Amongst them is what we call the "Crazy Kitchen". Basically, while nobody is around or awake, you open everything that isn't powered in the kitchen, and they walk in to see every door and device open. If anything, it works best after giving them a few warm-up pranks beforehand, like setting up a broom or something tall against the crack of the door, so when they open the door up, they get a stick dropped on them randomly. You can also saran the head-level of the doorway for good measure (lightly taped on so they don't get clotheslined; but rather, slowed down).

Most of the day is spent working and such usually (mostly landing on work days is a given), but it's nice to get hit with a clever prank every so often, but when work hours are no more, then back to business. Just as well, family is usually the main target, since we know the routines and traditional pranks. Crazy Kitchen is usually the flare for "Pranking has begun".

There are some brutal things you can do to people. Like putting raw shrimp in their curtain rods. So I don't see why that sort of prank is even entertaining. The sort of electronic pranks people do, like changing up their website, is usually good for a little laugh. I dunno, not really that great. The best of those is when there's social commentary involved and the site is poking huge fun at itself.

If we're talking terrible, mean "pranks", there's also pennying doors. The basic idea is that you hammer stacks of pennies into the gap between the door and the frame, preventing it from being opened normally. If you're out when it's done, it's a massive pain. If you're inside (as happened to the person who related it to me), you've got the choice of sitting around until you starve, calling for help and hoping people you know/can contact are strong enough to bullrush it open, taking the hinges off, or hoping your window is close enough to the ground to jump.

That's what makes great April Fools' jokes truly great. Master pranksters surprise people who already think they know something is coming.

My dad is a master prankster. He is so good that, every year, instead of trying to come up with a prank, bro and I spend all day looking for signs of a prank.

Success rate is zero, and April Fool's is tomorrow. I'm scared.
