Those stinking holes
« on: March 31, 2014, 05:58:08 am »

I was thinking of the migration waves and how they are "attracted" to your fort even if it is basically just a tomb full of miasma and no booze. Then i thought of what the place they came from must be like.
What unspeakable horrors must those other fortresses be for them to risk marching in the open to join your fort and sleep in the floor?
Or maybe they guys from the caravan are a bunch of shameless liars.

There is a reason you can make one of your dwarves a professional liar when you embark  8)

In fact if I want a leader dwarf I find an honest type dwarf and give him professional liar, because he will never gain it normally.

Proficient Liar, unless you modify the raws so that dwarves also have natural lying skill.

The migrants are probably attracted to the freedom and chance for social advancement.

Remember that the capital is a monarchy, unlike the relatively democratic colonial forts (your fort may vary  :P ).

In a player fortress, dwarves can be elected mayor and even randomly (to them) appointed to nobility.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Besides, just because the fort is a stinky hole now, doesn't mean they can't work hard to make it better.  They want beds?  Put 'em to work making beds!

And if your fort is a true deathtrap...that does reduce or stop migrants from coming.

Well North America and Australia, for example, were a sort of hellholes for Europeans at first, but yet some poor bastards eventually migrated there. And noticed that hey, we can do whatever we want to. And then more dudes came, because there was too much people in Europe and colonies promised free booze and freedom.

Anyway, how often you do see any actually useful dwarf migrating your fort? Mountainhomes send their criminals, peasants, cheese makers and other useless scum to you.

Haha, like, never. I always get annoyed when I get a horde of fisherdorfs in an area without surface water at all.

On the rare occasion though, you'd see some highly skilled warriordorf coming to your fort. Sadly, these are usually vampires.

Yeah, just yesterday I had a Great medical dwarf (as in Great in surgeon and everything else). I celebrated a bit, looked at his character description, noticed a few tells of a vampire, then drafted him into the military and stuck him behind a locked door. Three months later he's elected mayor and still doesn't need to eat, drink, or sleep.

There is currently a minor problem in that the veteran demons fighting in the corpse factory have failed to die in the 2 year battle and have become legendary unkillable gods of war. I may have misjudged this possible outcome.

Occasionally though you can get gems among those, namely those with some useful skill, even if it isn't their primary skill.

It'll get even more interesting in the next version with the new personality stuff because then you'll also get those who would have their own reasons for leaving the mountainhomes.

The fact that the vampires are ALWAYS elected mayor baffles me. There are 100+ other perfectly qualified beards but they all choose the same guy. Who sucks their blood.

I've had a fort elect a vampire their mayor. Particularly ironic was that they did this after I'd already had glass walls built around him and nicknamed him with the covenient label of "GODDAMN VAMPIRE." There was no way any of the other dwarves couldn't have known about his true nature when election time came.

But I suppose there's no such thing as bad publicity among drunkards.

My theory on why dwarves would migrate to a dystopian fort is that they are drawn there for the same reason many of us players enjoy the game: morbid fascination.

Not really. It's the same as any other feudal town: self-sufficient with own military, Noble class of rich, everyone else is tied to the land, etc.

It's not a monarchy, not really, it's a feudal aristocracy.
