Put the fire wood in the oven and light it up, then read the papers by the firelight and dry our wet clothes near it.

Always remember the joy you had when thinking about Lumumba and its king

You get your lighter out and spin the wheel. In the pale light, you can see that it's a pile of newspapers and propaganda posters - nothing looks too important. You take one - the headline reads "WAR MINISTER'S FAMILY KILLED BY DIVISIONIST TRAITORS" in flowery Northern script. The language is very similar to Isandan, even though the writing has many idiosyncrasies.

You throw the paper into the oven, stack a few logs over it, and light it. Soon, the fire is crackling merrily. In the dim light, you can see that the room has a single window - the shattered one that you felt before. The walls are bare logs, insulated with some sort of whitish moss. The oven in the center is a massive thing, with a chimney extending through the ceiling and a black iron plate that can be used for cooking, you suppose. You hang your shirt and pants over it, drag a chair over to the fire and skim over the rest of the papers.

Mostly those are old and not-so-old newspapers - the newest you can find is about a month and a half old, while the oldest is maybe two years old. They appear to be printed by the Verein Royal Press. You gulp and wish you were in Lumumba with fervor. Verein is one of the largest Islander states, and the one closest to the mainland. They are currently in a state of civil war between the supporters of the Divisionist movement and the royal family. That is not the worst, however: the worst is that the Assembly Wreckbombed the island state, promising to reverse the effects only when hostilities cease and an Assembly-compliant government is installed.

As far as you remember, Irevia pushed the decision to apply the Wreckbomb, and the bomb itself was built by Irevian patterncrafters. Isanda and Irevia have many things in common, and the southern island colonies and protectorates are divided between them almost evenly, leaving the other Continental states to squabble for the east and west. Isanda usually backs Irevia up in the Assembly, and vice versa.

Your clothing has dried.

Do we know if there is any sort of Isandan/Irevian embassy on the Island?

Military presense would work also, or naval embargo if we can get boat.

Then you get cities like Paris where you should basically just kill yourself already.

You won’t have to think anymore: it’ll be just like having fun!

Try to scout the area or rest whichever seems more fit.

Unless this wreckbomb would have killed them off.

You suppose that any Assembly state would have withdrawn its embassy before the bomb was applied. To leave one's own citizens in Wrecked land would be criminal. As for a naval embargo, one is in force, but that doesn't mean an Assembly naval force is present. Continental ports have just been closed to ships coming in from Verein, and the routes of trade and passenger ships have been changed to avoid the island. One of the reasons for the bombing, you remember, was the capture of several Irevian ships by Vereini forces - whether Royalist or Divisionist, it has not been determined.

However, you remember that an Isandan-Irevian volunteer legion has been dispatched to South Verein to assist local pro-Assembly forces. They should have their own ships.

You hear a disembodied sob and then a stuttering Northerner curse - it appears to be coming from the direction where you saw the light earlier. It has an echoing, unreal quality that makes estimating distance impossible. You shiver. It may be that this is something to do with the bomb.

-1 to that. Avoid the sound. By the sound of it wreckbombs must do something with the soul as well, and we ain't not afraid of no ghosts.

... any pipes around?
Yeah, guess we won't find any guns that easily, now would we. Still, something to hit with does sound better than our bare fists. A weapon - no matter how archaic in form - is always better and more intimidating than one at all.

Yah, changing to pipe-looking.

The sound startles you more than you would care to admit. You know that it won't do much, but you grab a stout stick from among the firewood and swing it through the air experimentally. Certainly, you could put a dent in a skull or two with this.

Satisfied with your new weapon, you lie down to sleep beside the oven, covering yourself with newspapers for additional warmth. Your sleep is uneasy: whatever is out there isn't enjoying itself much, judging by how it alternates between crying, cursing, and at one point singing what you tentatively identify as the national anthem of Verein in a raspy tenor before dissolving into more sobbing. Closer to dawn it quiets down, and you finally get some sleep.

When you wake up, pale morning light is streaming in through the broken window. It's cloudy outside.

Out we wander, first looking for signs of the noise.

Also remember to punch the asshole who thought up those bombs when we get back.
