Plants!
« on: March 30, 2014, 07:03:34 pm »

So many new plants. Will they all be farmable in Dwarf mode, or are they mostly restricted to the filthy surface dwellers? Do we still get to keep our precious underground plants? Are growth lengths longer now? So many questions.

hemp (Cannabis sativa)

You can now officially grow weed in your dwarf fortress.

I would really like my dwarves to be able to carve pumpkins, and then have a breakdown when their masterwork carved pumpkin rots heh heh.
But seriously, think of all the new alcohol they'll be trying to brew, jeez there will be no way to meet all their demands.

I assume hemp will be grown for its fibers and maybe for its nutritious seeds (and if you can't make oil from them I WILL mod it in) rather than being used for getting stoned.

add:

Btw it is simply AWESOME to finally have REAL plants! BIIIIIIG thanks to the Toady One!!

Now I can really not await the new version. Hopefully it won't come out when I have my exams, 'cause I'll be gone modding for about 3 days straight.

If Cannabis can't get you stoned, than someone must mod it in. And make the Elves sell it en masse.

It seems like everyone is obsessed with pot. Is there anyone else who isn't? Or am I the only one going, avacados? heck yeah, time for some guac, chips and dip!

Avocados are going to be used for throwing to kill gobbos, not for chips.

I'm just waiting for the first person to post when someone gets murdered by a falling coconut.

*Checks plant list*

Oh wait, that seems to be the only plant to not make the list.

Very well, anyone up for loading catapults with watermelons?

Hah, you're right! Date palm, but no coconut palm. One for the modders then, unless Toady modifies the existing in-game palm tree to produce coconuts.

As long as the plants have fictional-sounding names, like many of the plants that exist currently, I'm all for it.  Otherwise, generic celery doesn't really excite me.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed that Toady didn't come up with some new plants with the RL ones, but with that many I realize that it wouldn't really be practical, both to come up with and for people to get used to.

Can't poppies and coca get some love?  Or at least tobacco.  The lack of even tobacco implies that Toady intends solely for hemp to be another plant fiber.  Though the dwarves free-wheeling attitude toward complete and total dependence on alcohol would make their lack of other substance abuse weird.

Maybe we'll see some refinements on farming, like soil exhaustion and (hidden or otherwise) NPK levels for for farms.  Are orchards going to be a thing?  Lots of the new plant products come from trees.
