"It turns out that crossbows are pretty lovely unless you have an unenchanted one and no skill. Longbows and Slings are better in pretty much every other case, especially if you meet the 17 and 26 str requirements, respectively. If you have much strength at all you're better off putting a few points in throwing and getting your penetrating ammo that way. "

"slings are the most strength dependent of the launchers despite their speed being heavily dex weighted. It takes 26 str to max out a +9 sling (30 for Punk), vs 17 on a +9 longbow (some people say 14 but your average damage keeps going up til 17, though the max does not). They're also the most skill dependent."

I've won with every ranged weapon in the game. I can confirm that longbows are great. Slings are surprisingly good. I think I showed them off in my old LP.

That's a pretty impressive win, Covenant :D A few more like this and we can get top 10!

I'll try to win another game, but I don't hold much hope. I seem to be in a "messing up" phase.

I killed my centaur hunter because of ghost moths in spider:5 ... :s
First time I get one that far. It is disappointing how bows seem not to deal great damage, comparing them to 2H melee weapons...

Also disapointed by my lack of time playing this tournament. It was my first character reaching level 11 (finished lvl17).
I'll try a combo I know more and is meant to be more tanky... DDBe or GrBe, I think ...

So I haven't got much time to play recently, I'm just passing by to congratulate everyone for those awesome wins.

I might try to ascend a mage type by the end of the tournament but my last try (DEFE) ran into 6 consecutive uniques on snake 1~2 (Maud, Aizul, Nikola, Jorgrun, St Roka, Asterion). I killed Maud easily, Aizul came into view (No way I could do anything to him, he's too strong), so I ran to a close stair that lead down and met with the 4 others. I don't think I remember getting that many uniques thrown at me in so little space before.

I'll try a combo I know more and is meant to be more tanky... DDBe or GrBe, I think ...

You may want to consider HO of Beogh, they are easy and Beogh gives lots of points if you win him. Plus axes are fun.

I played one recently, and even if it was fun (and knights really add damage when they wield halberds and stay safe behind me), the Orc horde doesn't always really add something to the game. Except heads to hydras D:
And I find it hard to keep the priests and mages alive...

Impressive, Covenant! I hope I can get a streak going, but I play at a snail's pace.

I'm playing a Nemelex's Choice combo for my next attempt, FeDK. I've some experience with Felids, but I've never played as a Death Knight before.

So far I have two runes, but I'm not feeling too positive about the game, and I'd appreciate if anyone could take a look at the dump and offer some advice.

My felid was similar to yours. I used statue form, berserk, and haste a lot in Zot. It had over 150 HP and maxed unarmed. Everything died in a few hits. Recommended spells: Statue Form/Dragon Form, Confusing Touch, Deflect Missiles, Flight, Song of Slaying, Blink, and Control Teleport. I've never played a DK, but hasted bone dragons are incredibly effective in Zot. The bone card was one of my favorites for my Nemelex worshipers.

Orc Messiah is good. I had a team of 6 warlords, when I entered Zot. Sadly, only two survived. Electric golems and orbs of fire brutalized my orcs. If I had given them better gear, most of them probably would've survived. Control what they can pickup and equip. Set it to 'player' when you want to give them something, then 'none' when you're finished kitting them. Give them gear with resists, or they'll drop like flies in Zot. And yeah, priests and sorcerers are a pain to keep alive. It doesn't help that they refuse to wear armor.

Finally got a rune on an OpIE, after the most painful and careful Snake:5 clear I've experienced!

You know those Guardian Serpent thingies, the green snake-y ones? Well they are god damn terrifying when they surround you with Naga Warriors, let me tell you that. Nearly died to one, had to blow all my tele and blink scrolls at the time.

This is likely the last character I'll be running this tournament, hopefully I can win it by Friday and have my weekend free.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

How to deal with stair-locking jerks...

I read an immolation scroll on Vault:5, then I punched a guard until he exploded. Then everyone else started exploding. I got teleported away by a distortion effect, which was a good thing. The chain of explosions took out half my health, despite having max fire resistance. Makhleb wasn't impressed with my nuclear fists. Apparently, he doesn't count inner flame deaths.

Anyway, I got my 3rd rune. I'll probably finish up tomorrow.

Ok guys, my latest SpEn, destined by the relentless passage of time to be my final proper character this tourney, has reached the mid game. I have two runes (shoals then spider), and just started on Vaults.

I have a question about the immediate future: Which should I memorize *right now*: Mass Confusion, or Iron Shot? Eventually, I would like to pick up both, but right now, which do I need the most? Crowd control, or something for those annoying single hard to hex monsters? I have no idea if mass confusion is any good, never used it before - if I have like, 10 normally hexable but definitely dangerous monsters in LOS (seems to happen all the time in the new Vaults), can I expect to like, confuse all of them?

I'm a noob, here, but ...
You're Sp, so you can flee from the "single dangerous non-hexable monster", while getting a little more Spellcasting and/or forgetting confuse/hibern.
The difference in damage between Stone Arrow and Iron Shot is pretty big (according to bots/wiki), so it doesn't realyl seem possible to stay just with SA, and Sticky flame ... Well, it's melee, and you're a Sp. So you really will need the damage boost.

I'd say it depends more on what branch you're going for next. Mass conf will be more useful in V:5 than Iron shot, but I don't know whether you should go for the Silver Rune. On the other hand, Iron shot would be more useful in Abyss.

I would never amnesia hibern. Its basically awesome the entire time. Anyway, if the evidence of my death is anything to go by, mass confuse was the wrong choice - I got absolutley pawned by hellfire running away from a deep elf sorcerer who probably would not have stood up to a coupple of iron shots to the face.

Technically I died because I panicked (getting out of melee range from a deep elf sorcerer is like totally idiotic, didnt try to hellfire me until I was away from it, I just totally forgot hellfire was a thing they do), but I would have panicked a lot more effectively in this case with iron shot - would have tried casting it several times before trying to gtfo... Ah well.

This panic thing is definitely a problem for me. Its a turn based game, and I keep on loosing well-established characters because I start rushing at the first sign of trouble, which is like, utterly the worst thing to do. I don't even understand how I beat crawl 5 times, or ADOM multiple times, back in the day *sigh*.

I finished my 4th game. I broke my record for the least # of games played in a tourney. :P Got a bunch of points for streaking with a ghoul. I'm not sure why ghouls have so few wins. They're immune to a lot of stuff. And eating heals them. Maybe the hunger system scares people away? Anyway, I might try a mummy next.
