I'm doing pretty well. I've gotten farther than I ever have before (I'm at the entrance to Orc and Lair), and I have a ridiculous amount of gear. I have a ton of wands, plus an artifact amulet.

Sorry if the answer is obvious, but how do I dump my character? I want to ask for advice here, since I'm not sure quite how to proceed.

I don't know if it's the same for other servers, but on CAO, you hit # (while ingame), and the dump file will be at crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/elephantparade/elephantparade.txt. Obviously, replace elephantparade with whatever your Crawl name is.
Funnily enough, ElephantParade is actually my Crawl name. Thanks!

I keep having to use the Spear of Chaos since Xom gets bored. I've read up a bit on Xom, and ... not sure what to do. I generally play normally then when Xom gets bored out comes the Spear of Chaos and Wand of Random Effects and wackiness ensues. The wackiness mostly involves berserking/hasting/invisibility-ing every single thing I even glance at.
I wouldn't use a chaos weapon. Even with Xom. and even greatly enchanted one.
Xom's effects are usually easier to deal with (especially as you get more levels, because you get more HP to buffer his damage, and more means to get away from bad situations), but the weapons effects can be worse. The shaft Shaft self, duplicate other, berserk, etc... It's a weapons you don't want to use against uniques, especially.
I played a few CK on trunk, and as you noticed, they gathered good mutations thanks to xom (even got gifted a few nice rods early on), but didn't use chaos weapon after D:8. And still, it's not Xom who killed them.

So first and foremost - identify your stuff. Immediately. All those unID-d wands are giving me an ulcer. Evoke all the wands [they all ID on use nowadays], then wear/scroll ID the rings - you have innate rPois and rElec which are the two optional resists for Lair, but Gargoyles live and die by their resistances, since your HP is so low and armour - so high. rF would be decent since Lindwurms can and will ruin your day. For general dungeoneering purposes you absolutely want to have a pip of rF and rC, and all the MR you can find.

Scrolls of Fear and Fog are what you're specifically looking for when doing the Lair. Blinking is nice and all, but it's rare and Fear can do the same job and fog can do miracles to shadow your escape from a dragon or Norris or what have you. If you get Shoals don't forget you can use scrolls of Noise and Wands of Lightning to cancel the mesmerise [which I didn't know until like 2 days ago  :-X]

Your skills look OK - that Dire Flail requires 14 skill to hit mindelay, I believe. You can probably turn fighting off and get M&F and Armour a bit higher, after which decide whether you are going two-hander or 1h&shield. If 2H, try to find some of the fancy new evokables - Phials of Floods and Fans of Gales are the best, Lamp of Fire is ok, some of the rods rule. If there are any available, get some Evo skill - I'd say about 7-10, but I know nothing of break points nowadays so someone else should be able to give you actual information. Don't forget to use the bloody things - they recharge with EXP gained.

If 1H, Control-F for a "buckler" - it only requires 5 skill to eliminate melee penalty and is decent defensive bonus.

Ideally you'll want Evocations & Evocables on a Troglodyte anyway, but the above, I feel, is the best schedule - someone else feel free to correct me. Train fighting and Armour, summon your Trogbros whenever the situation gets shaky, don't try to hold out for gifts. On a Troglodyte you will get your favourite weapon, the only question is will you be alive long enough to use it.

As for branches, do Lair till L:8 - don't do L:8 if you feel unsure about it. After that Orc 1-4, again - careful with 4. Do the Dungeon, then the easier of your Lair branches. For me they go Swamp -> Shoals -> Snake -> Spider, but your opinion may differ. Spider is a lot easier on a Gurgle, since they have a ton of armour and innate rP. Dangerous enemies in Lair are : Death Yaks -> horrible melee; Katoblepas -> shoot calcifying dust, not dangerous for Gargoyles, but remember them for future reference; Blink Frogs -> pretty decent melee, don't let yourself get surrounded; Elephants -> knock you away from staircases; Lindwurms -> heavy Fire damage; Hydras -> hydras; Komodo dragons - heavy melee, cause sickness - not a problem for gars, again - future reference; random uniques.

Main dangers are Hydras and Swamp dragons in Swamp, Merfolk Aquamancers and Impalers in Shoals, Greater Nagas, Naga Sharpshooters, Naga Ritualists and a ton of other stuff in Snake. Get to Branch:5 and leave and do the other branch. The final levels of the branches are much more dangerous than the previous ones. Get Vaults 1-4 if you are still feeling unsure, then go back and do the branch ends.

Search every new enemy on the bots : http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots, they seem to be a bit broken but still work. Alternatively, https://loom.shalott.org/learndb.html

Other than that, good luck with your run!

Also, Elephant Parade, if you find a scroll of acquirement. Use it to ask for a staff/rod. As a Troglodyte, you're garanteed to get a rod. None of those are bad, and most of them are really good and rare.

I'll chime in with recommendations for high evocations skill; not being able to use magic yourself means that evokable items are the best way to make up that lack of flexibility. Most evokables increase in either power or success rate based on your evocations skill, and higher evocations skill makes them pretty reliable. Like Graven said, just zap the unID'd wands at a wall (preferably across the room) so you know what they all do.

If this is the first time you've made it this far, I'll mention that Lair:2 is a great place for a stash. Jellies don't spawn there to eat your stuff, and none of the monsters there are intelligent enough to steal it. Pretty soon you'll be finding you can't carry everything with you, so use Lair:2 as a spot to keep your excess food/wands/potions/whatever.

The only other thing I'd think about is a ranged weapon, since being able to kill everything in LoS is much better than only killing things that can punch you back. If you're thinking of going with a mace and a shield then you may want to consider some Sling skill, otherwise you can use a nice Longbow or Crossbow. Once you get a bit of skill in whatever you want to use Trog should hook you up with a good version sooner or later.

A Lamp of Shadows is available in a shop. Should I buy it? It's an evocable, but I'm not sure if it's worth purchasing.

Also, I ID'd all my wands. I'll start training evocables.

Finally, I'm sitting on one of those time-decaying branch portals. Should I go in? It's the orc one.

Do you guys edit your options file? It makes things a lot more convenient.

Here's mine...

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rcfiles/crawl-0.14/DrFeelgood.rc

I took most of it from various players. Someone might find it useful.

A Lamp of Shadows is available in a shop. Should I buy it? It's an evocable, but I'm not sure if it's worth purchasing.

Also, I ID'd all my wands. I'll start training evocables.

It summons weak shadows around you and shrinks your LOS. I rarely use it, but it's useful for escaping.

EDIT: Baileys are pretty easy.

EDIT2: added a link

I have died in a Bailey quite often, but then, I am a much worse player than DrFeelgood. If I get the one where loads of orcs with spears can surround you at the entrance, and I am feeling confident and don't just leave immediately, then I die. If I get one with an orc warlord, sometimes I die. I even sometimes die in the crossbow moat one. It all depends on my character. Sometimes they are fine though.

I remembered why I suck at EE in general: everything goes awesome until somewhere in Lair, then I come across my first proper dangerous situation, and I just don't have enough MP to do the damage - wearing a ring of power, 16 earth skill, a couple of LRDs completely fail to damage my prey, then 4 out of 5 of my stone arrows miss, and I am in trouble. A similar levelled FE would just have fire balled and sticky flamed everything ages ago, an IE could back off whilst his ice beasts do their thing, AE can just swift the fuck out of there.

I just can't ramp up EE past the early game :(

I find EEs quite easy, but I only play DDs and Grs - god help me if I found those hard.

For what it's worth, try to diversify your spell list with all your might - early-mid lair's about the hardest part of getting an EE going. To be honest at that spell power it is completely possible for Stone Arrow to hit an enemy if you cast it enough times and the enemy at least a plant if not a fungus, but a Fireball or even Sticky Flame will make things much easier. My only EE win was a hybrid DD of Makhleb, however all the recent EEs I've run have been straight-out rush Earth Till Shatter deal. Shatter is unique among endgame spells in that it, alone, can carry you to Zot - there's pretty much nothing flying pre-extended. I've generally gotten Iron Shot going at late Lair with Vehumet, which helps in that you need less spells to hit.

If you're getting high Conj you should be able to get Fireball castable at about early-mid Lair, if not, well. You could realise how the sitation would play out and retreat at the second LRD, skip the Stone Arrows part and go level up elsewhere, but then again if I followed my own advice i'd be top 3 in the tourney by now instead of killing off my 11th char in Lair.

Somewhat unrelated, but I should probably accept that the least won race-god-class combos have a pretty darn good reason to be the least won.

I won with a MDEE, DDEE, and GrEE. They're one of my favorite classes.

EE early game guide

1. Pick either DD or Gr.
2. Spam sandblast at everything. If the enemy is tough, wield some rocks.
3. Learn all the spells in your starting book.
4. If DD, worship Makhleb. If Gr, worship Vehumet.
5. Spam stone arrow at everything too tough to kill with sandblast.
6. Use LRD on stone/metal walls against packs of enemies. You probably won't have high enough spellpower to deal much damage with it early on though.

You can beat the game with just iron shot, but shatter and spellforged servitor are incredibly fun.

Crystal Spear turret: haste, spellforged servitor, and crystal spear. If crystal spear is only attack spell you know, then your servitor will just spam crystal spear at everything. Cast haste on it, so it can spam crystal spear even faster. The main downside is that you constantly have to shout commands at it, or it will do nothing.

So, what next? I have a ton of wands back in my stash at Lair:2, FYI. Spider is probably the best choice right now, since the Death Yaks on the next floor of Lair seem to be pretty deadly.

What I'd do is keep training only Fighting and Armour, read the scroll of acquirement and wish for Armour or Wands [wands has a decent chance of getting you Teleportation, Healing and Haste, but I'm addicted to the rush of getting good armour]. Hit up Orc:4 first to see what shops you have, though. In general, don't carry Acquirement and Cure mut on yourself if you're not planning on using them right away, they're a limited and very valuable resource.

Change the corroded gloves and helm if there are any others available.

Switch the ring of protection - 2 AC is nothing, and you don't have any elemental resists. Use the regen ring, it's still better. Since you have Trog's hand what you could do is get a ring of rF+ an a ring of rC+ and just Trog's hand whenever there are enemies that can abyss. Possibly up-to-date list of enemies that can abyss:

Banishment : Cast by deep elf demonologists/sorcerers, Louise and SOME (ancient) liches, wizards, deep elf magi, ogre-magi, Erolcha, and pan lords.

Try to clear up the entirety of Lair skipping the floor with the Death Yaks, and see if you don't get Swamp as your second branch - it's easier than Spider, spider has some pretty unique threats - Orb Weavers mostly, which can hurt. Swamp will only have Hydras, Swamp Dragons and the occasional Thorn Lotus. Don't understimate the lotuses, they can bring the pain. If you get Shoals, you might want to do Spider first - flying trivializes a lot of Shoals, but aquamancers and impalers are balls.

After clearing Orc and Lair I'd hit up the dungeon up to the end, see what loot you get along the way.

Also if you're not going 2-hander get a buckler ASAP, dip into the first level of Elf if you must. The main dangers are getting mobbed by spellcasting elves, but you can Brothers them. Use Trog's Hand if you see any fancy elves and run away - it gives bonus MR and getting Abyssed is the major danger. Deep Elf Demonologists and sorcerers can banish, I'm not sure about others. I think most others just instagib you with spells. Don't try to fight too much - you're just there for a quick buckler as a desperation move. If you are using a 2-Hander, get 20 M&F and swing that 2-hander around. An antimagic eveningstar is an end-game 1-Hander, though, so you could just enchant it up and use that.

edit : Yeah, you could use the scroll for Staves acquirement and get a rod. You already have decent evocations, and a rod of clouds/ignition could be a wonderful addition. I can't find an up-to-date list of rods, unfortunately. I'd probably still go for armour, but that's because I tend to forget I have rods, since they don't show up on the Evoke screen unless wielded, and who has the awareness to remember what items they have?!?

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.
"Hear me, exalted spirits. Hear me be you gods or devils, ye who hold dominion here. I am a wizard without a home. I am a wanderer seeking refuge."

-snip-
The gloves and helm got corroded just before I exported the data.

Orc:4 has some kind of superorc next to the stairs, along with a ton of other monsters. I'm staying out of it for now, since that orc was able to inflict obscene amounts of damage using a crossbow (?).

I'll switch the rings. Piety is at ******, and the amulet means that I never have food problems.

Would enchanting the eveningstar be a good idea? Trog might gift me something better, after all.

In that case try to get to the bottom of the Lair, exercising caution as it is still a branch end, and you can get some nasty stuff in there.

I've 15-runed with an eveningstar. You could get a better enchanted eveningstar, but they are rather rare. Your choice, really - if you choose to stick to a one-hander however getting a buckler and 5 shields skill to negate the penalty is your primary concern.

Other than that previous post still stands :D

edit : VV Could be Saint Roka, that guy smites like an Old Testament Deity AND occasionally has a crossbow!

Also ranged combat is governed by some arcane Eldritch code and I don't understand a thing, but in general I believe the consensus is crossbows are strong-ish at low skill after which they quickly devolve into the worst Ranged weapon. Longbows rule, Javelins can do a ton of damage with high throwing skill. Someone on the SA forums had a web thingie to calculate ranged weapon damage, lemme see if i can find it.
