Dammit Crawl, make up your mind what you want this MiBe to be!

Started with an axe? Here, have a +1/+1 mace of Crushing! Still not sure? Have a Large Shield, +2/+1 Flail of Holy Wrath and ten steel sling bullets to boot!

Feel good? Invested some points into that combo? Hey look an orc with a +2/+2 Battleaxe of Freezing! Trolololol

It's a good thing they crosstrain, but if I find a good morning/eveningstar that makes me want to switch back again...

Hm. Oklob Plant outside of the entrance to Lair. I can sneak into melee in two steps, so I can PROBABLY berserk it to death before anything terrible happens, but maybe this is a good excuse to try the Lord of Darkness banner first...

Lair branch runes down, clearing the Vaults now. First branded Great Mace is Holy Wrath, so I don't even have to switch to TSO to get one. I'm using a dire flail of protection, wondering whether to just slap all my scrolls into the Holy Wrath one and go with it. It won't help until extended, but I've enough to get it to at least +6, and I've a ring of slaying.

Maybe I'll keep the protection one. I only have 45 AC or something, after all :D

CLAN is a bit better today, I guess the great influx of players at day 1 surprised the poor thing.

But now it is time for Witches Abroad and Sir Terry Pratchett.

edit : Eurgh. Just slapped an Ench W III on the Great Mace, and Donald drops a branded Eveningstar.

I've won with both, but I tend to prefer 1h + shield, since actually there's a lot of stuff in extended that can be blocked - Bolt spells from Fiends, Crystal Spears, Iron Bolts etc. It's a 2 base damage difference - 17 for GM, 15 for Eveningstar. Really torn here. There are a lot of randart bucklers and the like, and I could feasibly go for even a Large Shield, I also have a +4 ring of slaying...

God I hate choices.

I don't know whether going for large shield is a really good idea, when there is nothing preventing you from putting some XP (the 15->25 shield one) in earth magic and other schools, to improve your suvivability with buffs and other things...
But, as usual, it realyl depends on what is lying around, especialyl in term of shield of resistance and randarts :D
But yeah, if the eveningstar is good, there is nothing preventing you from going buckler + 1-handed

Welp, found the Dragon King armor on a FoAK. Cleared Lair relatively easily (Banish is super useful) and on track to disto-brand a great mace. All in all, it's going pretty well.

Well, it's a GrFi, so it's not really a surprise :)
Gargoyles are usually "easy" enough to be able to win without much help from their god, so they're one of the best for a early Zin run, as you appear to have thought, too.

I'm still on my 1st character. I heard that gargoyles got nerfed, but they're still very easy. My GrEE is doing well, though I wished I picked Kiku instead of Vehumet. Vehumet is boring.

Gargoyles are wonderful. I love Gargoyles. I am, however, starting to feel a bit guilty winning Gargoyles, because they're basically built for 15-rune runs. Only their low HP can cause a mishap - hellfire and surprisingly smiting become much greater threats. Smoke demons can and will ruin your shit.

My own run is going along predictably well, Evocations saved me from a few certain deaths, random chance saved me from another one [I was quite low in HP, no escapes apart from Zin's sanctuary, Pan lord turned out to have distortion branded melee which teleported me in the other end of the level]

Extended is so god damn boring, though. My god. This is why I like to get a 15-rune gargoyle out of the way at the start, so I don't have to put up with this bullshit with less powerful combos.

I also haven't found the vanilla Pan rune, but there is a limit to the amount of time I can spend there. Now to go visit Tomb, and finally the hells. Because the hells are the worst thing ever. Tomb at least has a static layout and a finite amount of enemies.

Splatted one of my best runs by teleporting (shadowstepping) my way into the middle of a Polyphemus' horde and getting petrified, because I'd never seen him before. -_-;;

Started a new run (still Vine Stalker Assassin) and I found the +7, +5 Spear of Ambiguity (Pierce, +Rage, Int+1). Guess my assassin is using spears!

Just got my first rune for the tournament! I had my doubts about my disto-great mace at first, but I'm starting to like it more. The extra damage effect is great when you get it, and the teleporting away can be really useful for breaking up huge fights. The "instakill" from banishment is, of course, pretty great. I've taken out quite a few uniques that way already.

Distortion is great for casters, and pretty decent on big stompy weapons, provided you are fine with occassionally flinging enemy casters and archers across the room to gob more goo at your precious face.

I assume a Distortion axe is going to be quite hilarious, but I haven't yet tried it.

edit : I won! And I'm in the top scores! Wooo! And I have the current second fastest realtime 15-rune win!

So uh... where're the morgues hosted again?

Just finished Vault:1-4. Much harder than I remember it being when I got this far in the past, all thanks to ironbrand convokers. My character can tank stone giants and dragons reasonably well, but if I get surrounded by them it's another issue entirely, given that I don't have any way to teleport (besides Bend Space, which has definitely saved me once this run). The worst thing is when ironbrand convokers chain-summon more ironbrand convokers. Ugh. Still, I eventually figured out the correct tactic: always retreat towards the up stairs, and when in doubt, stairscum. Besides that, though, my character is coming along pretty well.

Think the plan for the rest of the game is Snake:5 -> Depths -> Blades/Elf/Crypt? (not sure about how these are) -> Vault:5 -> Zot. It's been a long time since I've gotten this far, though, and any advice is welcome.
