How do you name your squads?
« on: March 28, 2014, 03:56:24 pm »

I usually name them something like Sword of Death for a sword squad or Cavern Devestators. Function and awesomeness combo.

I've run enough fortresses that I don't usually name them for much besides functionality anymore.

"Maces"
"Swords"
"Vampire"
etc.

I'm a big fan of the dwarven random name generator, so I usually just keep the same name with an added letter (X for crossbows, M for melee) at the beginning so I remember how they're armed.

First Dwarven Legion. Second Dwarven Legion. Third Dwarven Legion. Label the dorf's professions as their squad name. And then when one of them is wiped out, I pretend I am Octavian and mourn their loss.

I do that too. Bonus points if it's somewhat related to their intended mission, or totally not making any sense.

Then you get cities like Paris where you should basically just kill yourself already.

You won’t have to think anymore: it’ll be just like having fun!

Usually "marksdwarves 1st", "marksdwarves 2nd", "hammerdwarves 1st" or "warriros 1st" if they use mixed weapons

I'm pretty basic with my military.

Militia - This is the actual melee defensive force. Best armor and weapons, and they do nothing but train until needed.

Fortress Watch - A squad of archers who also double as the police force. When they're not training, stationed on the parapets or gates, they are patrolling the halls making sure berserk dwarves and other law-breakers don't cause trouble.

Prison Guards - A squad of dwarves I keep in a super secure prison-like burrow where I keep prisoners and have execution chambers. They are posted at levers to lock things down in case of an escape, as well as patrol around the prison. They're not usually needed since I don't even try to lock up building destroyers, and goblins don't often break free when being moved, but I like to have them for realism.

Something in the style of the random generator but with a weapon grade metal in the name. I then give all the members of the squad nicknames based on the metal and a noun. "Ironbeard", "Steeltoe", etc.

I rarely have a large professional military, just one or two elite, heavily armed squads and a ton of levies with crossbows or spears, and a chainmail shirt and leggings, that are only active a few months out of the year. The levies get stuck with things like patrol and watch duty, while the heavy infantry lead the charge on a siege or get sent to kill whatever megafauna shows up. I give them names based on the order I made them, and their equipment. 1st Swordsdwarves, 2nd Swordsdwarves, 1st Levy Crossbows, 2nd Levy Crossbows, 1st Levy Spears...

Ranged 1. Ranged 2. Ranged 3. Melee 1. etc...

If I get enough melee squads I start separating them into Edged, Blunt and Spear. But I don't usually have a lot of melee.

I don't always bother to name them, but when I do it's usually just the weapon they use, or some pun related to the weapon.

Except for specialty squads, like 'Vampires', 'Werebeasts', and 'Doomed Nobles'.

I tend to go with weapon or animal themes, with an exceptions here and there.

Skirmishers: Mostly leather armor with a metal helmet and chain shirt under the leather armor. Issued with spears because historically those and hatchets/axes were most likely to be the weapon of a commoner. Skirmishers are professional light infantry who rely on speed to take down enemies. They are glass cannons without a doubt but I've seen what lightly armored speardwarves can do to a siege.

Conscripts: When I have the time to equip a needed swarm of untrained rabble to hold something back. Survivors will probably be cycled into a Skirmisher squad. Might have the armor if they're lucky, but often it's just a spear, metal hat and a wooden shield.

Weapon and/or animal themes tend be be variable, and sometimes I use names of squads from certain LPs: Cazadores, Hammerheads, Golden Maces, Cave Dragons, Thunderous Boots (for when I have musket dwarves in masterwork,) Ironbreakers (because who doesn't like a badass Warhammer reference like that for hammerdwarves?) The Gilded Men, New Paints, Copper Gears...

Other times I'll go all military organization: 1st-5th Squads, 1st Company for the first 5 squads, 1st-5th Squads, 2nd Company for the next and so on. In those cases I only need to know who the squad leaders are to know what the squad is armed with and that's just a quick look at the military screen if I forget.

Fortress Guard tends to just be named that in most cases, plus with raw mods I also have a "Governor's Guard" and sort-of reestablished a Royal Guard squad, as well as made nobles have to earn their title and privileges through force of arms which has me generally just name them by the noble: "Urist McBaron," Urist McCount," "Urist McKing" and such.

How I keep track of this shit I have no idea.
