Communist Fort challenge
« on: March 27, 2014, 08:58:13 pm »

So I am not sure if this really qualifies as a "challenge" per say but for a newby like me this was pretty difficult to do.
The challenge
1- All dwarves have all labors active
2- if a dwarf acts out of line they must work as a farmer or wood cutter as first punishment
3- if they act out of line again execute the law breaker
4- all dwarves are equal (no rooms for nobles that are better than those of everyone else)
5- minimal clothing (who needs a clean shirt anyways)
6- little to no food/drink diversity
7- (optional) if anyone angers you (be it dwarf, elf, kobold, goblin, louse man, etc.) kill them
tell me how you like this challenge and suggest any additions or revisions to this challenge

This is not a challenge, it's a common day in our insane asylum we like to call bay12 forums.

this is why im asking for more things to add to make it a bit more challenging
but do remember the point is to create a communist/(in this case) third world working camp

but seriously i am playing this right now and i would love to have something to make it more interestingly realistic compared to say 1940's ish russia

Personally, I prefer meritocracy to communism. Organize the social hierarchy around usefulness to the overseer.

that is how i usually do my fortresses that is why this is a bit of a challenge for me. I am used to starting up and playing a fort the same way every time. I thought it would be fun to do it differently and well might as well tell all of bay12 about it.

Well, if you want a real challenge here, how about this.

-Everyone knows communism is the highest form of government. Therefore, you must construct all parts of the fortress in the sky, letting your dwarves live in purity without the filth of dirty capitalist dirt. Furthermore, to help maintain the purity of your paradise, dwarves who leave for the surface must be cleaned using a mist sprayer to rid them of primitive surface-dwelling notions such as free competition.

Hmmm, its tough to come up with rules that make sense in the context of communism yet fit within the game mechanics while adding challenge.

Here are a couple that might make things tougher and ape communist ideals. The whole equality between all classes idea can be taken to serious extremes and should make for some FUN! scenarios.

Set the rule so that all dwarves receive the same exact material possessions making only mandatory job related changes to this standard issue dwarf gear ration. For instance, you want to give your legendary axe dwarf full masterwork steel armor then you must have masterwork steal armor made for and equipped by every single dwarf in your fortress from the lowest peasant to your greatest warrior. If you want to give him a masterwork steel axe then you must have masterwork steel weapons for every single dwarf in the fortress that can weld one or at least weapons of comparable quality and value such as a masterwork silver hammers for hammer dwarfs.

Also everyone is in the military. EVERYONE. It would be unconscionable not to divide up the burden of fortress security equally between all dwarves, able bodied or not. There must be no preferential treatment when assigning dwarves to squads. Your elite fighters, incompetent farmers, mayor, bookeeper, legendary armor etc. get randomly assigned together in mix matched groups of all social standings. There is no putting all your more important dwarves into separate units that get to hang back and play it safe in a siege. Everyone is equal. Legendary Armorer and useless peasant will fight and die side by side.

Treat the capitalist scum you encounter in the only way fit for such barbarians. Kill them all, every last money grubbing merchant that shows up must be executed and the spoils equally divided between everyone in the fort.

Healthcare for everyone. This means staffing an absolutely huge hospital. No injured dwarf should ever go without a hospital bed, crutch etc.

You must never show favoritism towards any dwarf for any reason. There will be no sacrificing lesser dwarves to save more valuable ones. Each dwarven life is worth exactly the same. Even children.

Although these rules are few in number and quite simple it should actually make things a lot harder while sticking to the theme pretty nicely.

At the start of each year/season the overseer becomes convinced one of his friends is a traitor and has them executed. If he has no friends left he'll pick the closest dwarf.

I'd change change rules 4, 5, and 6 to "Give all dwarves as good living conditions as possible, but if you can't provide something for everybody, nobody gets it." This allows you to develop your fortress to communist ideals without stopping at the point where it did so in history.

It's hard to make a communist fortress because our fortresses are already communist.
Everyone who needs clothes gets them for free, gain a home with proper resources for free, their food and booze gratis, and don't gain a single ☼ for their job. Even for trading we don't use money, we just exchange resources...

IcyTea31's changes to rules 4-6 is mostly my forts with the exception of the nobles that demand stuff. Every other dwarf has a 3x4 room with bed, armor stand, weapon rack, cabinet, and door. Eventually I'll smooth/engrave them. Maybe.

...I think I'm too nice. But then again, my legendary dining room is ridiculous. Masterwork engraving with a cobalt vein through it, gem windows in the wall to the hallway, and gem windows set in the spaces between tables. It's kind of...acid trippy?

For some reason this is actually easier to play than how i normally do, All tasks are being finished without me worrying that no one is doing them.
