Toady intends to add 'moving fortresses' and fortress parts, so yeah, it'll definitely be a thing.
Really? Can I get a link to where he said that? This interests me.

I'm looking forwards to when catapults damage walls, though. That'll be neat.

One of the recentish talks I believe, in the context of moving mecha-fortresses and such. I don't know where to find the transcripts, but you should be able to find it if you search them for moving fortresses/parts.

All I need is a wagon with fortifications and a pair of good marksdwarves, Hussite style.

I am not sure if this would work without some SCIENCE, as I do not know if things like dragons can ride minecarts and shoot fire from them if they can.

But, assuming that's possible:

1. Put a minecart on a roller behind a gate. The track extends around the outside of the fort in all manner of directions so the cart can cover the field.

2. Drop a dragon down a pit directly above the minecart and cover the pit with a bridge so the dragon doesn't fly out (may be a tad difficult to do).

3. When besieged, open the gate that's preventing the minecart from moving.

If it works, the dragon should start shooting fire everywhere as it zips around the tracks.

Nah, cart riding is a job. As long as your dragon doesn't do any labours, he won't hop onto a art either.

You could mod dwarves to breathe fire, but it would have absolutely devastating effects. Even if you set them as fireproof, your fortress is going to burn down.

Tanks with "flamethrowers" sound fun, though. Maybe force a dragon to sit at the front of the tank, and then you're all set.

I tried that. Modded the dwarves to be fireproof, but the woodcutters would start huge fires every time they got surprised by wildlife, and the farmworkers burned up all of the livestock, before I gave up on the experiment. Devastating is the right word.

Yeah, this is why I don't use the Emberlight Warrior (fire-throwing) units in the LFR mod.  You'd have to isolate them in an all-stone section of the fortress, never letting them have contact with normal civilians (or cave moss, bushes, trees, ...).

You could have a modded reaction set up to convert dwarves into a "firebreather" caste, and then put them in minecarts that go around the fort over and over.

Needs to shoot ironclad badgerdogs and run on pure grain alcohol. Also needs to take up 15x15 squares and be amphibious.

Again, the rest of the fortress will burn if you ever get a berserk dwarf - or if a giant kea comes to say hello, even. :P Trust me, it's happened. In my radiation mod, radiation was originally comic book radiation that had a chance of giving them superpowers. Apart from the odd superpower that made them spatter filth everywhere, it was burning the fortress down at random that made me decide to do away with it.
