Tanks
« on: March 27, 2014, 05:19:20 pm »

I know that this is a long ways away.

But one day we will be able to send out military out to raid other villages, goblin towers, necromancer towers, and the like. And when that day comes, someone will find a way to build a tank that is powered by cats, shoots lava, and has two posts on it for two marksdwarves to rain bolts down upon any unlucky enough to get in their way. There would also be a third attack that would allow them to destroy buildings. I know that this will happen because the people here are insane enough to try it.

Hmmm... I'm thinking a BUILDING_DESTROYER wagon pulled by cats with a marksdwarf riding. Also, why is this in fort mode when it should be in general discussion?

Because sending your military out will mostly affect dwarf mode?

Forget wagons with marksmen, make that thing out of adamantine and stick four tame dragons inside THEN put marksmen on the top. Cat-apult is optional.

Yes, but what about a lava cannon? Something with a flood gate and a 1x1 box that had lava pumped into it continuously to create a pressurized amount of lava. Then, a lever is pulled and the floodgate opens causing all of the pressurized lava to go flying out and coat everything in front with the molten rock?

I personally believe that tanks, as surmised by the OP, will _not_ be possible anytime in the near future. They would require constructions to move together as a group in order to function, which not only isn't the case for how things work right now, but isn't likely to be the case for quite a few updates.

Are you saying we can't dream to help breathe life into this idea?

TruePikachu, one day it will be possible. And until that day, I will be perfecting the lava canon. And along with the lava canon, I will be training cats to pull objects via leashes.

I'm saying that it won't be possible in the forseeable future. I don't think it is a development goal. That said, one _could_ make a creature with the abilities. Say a firebreathing building destroyer which can dual wield XBows and eats cats. You just wouldn't be able to _build_ it with constructions.

Yes, it would be a long ways away. But I still wish to perfect my lava cannon. And I feel that working on the designs of the weapons now would be much more beneficial than in the future, as to start raiding quickly and effectively.

Give a dragon arms, and make it lay cat eggs.

What do we need tanks for? We already have ballistic artillery strikes, fixed-installation gatling guns/grapeshot cannon and orbital bombardment.

Something like tanks may well be part of a development cycle of the not-too-far future, although probably not as self-propelled constructions, rather as movable siege engine, possibly using code similar to the current wagons.

Toady intends to add 'moving fortresses' and fortress parts, so yeah, it'll definitely be a thing.
