I think it may be by order of recent activity.

e: because after I posted this, i went and looked, and my name was at the top of the list.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's it. If you click around in some threads or make a post, you'll shoot to the top of the list. Worldwide fame and glory!!!

Profile -> Account Settings -> Show others your online status -> Uncheck the box.

I'm pretty sure that thing has been there forever. If you tag someone as a 'buddy' while you're on their profile, it bolds their name in the list of users logged in so it's easier to tell if they're around.

I've got to say I'm a little disappointed, I opened this thread expecting some random philosophical discussion. You know stuff like whether something that's right in front of you but you don't notice is "hidden" or "invisible".

AFAIK, your own name is always at the top.

Nope, not always. Most of the time it is, because opening a new forum page counts as activity. But you'll notice you won't be at the top if you refresh.

And, as some people in FG&RP may have noticed, you can click to a new page, but still be behind someone else who clicked a millisecond later or so. Gives you a weird feeling.

Yeah I'd rather see posts ranked by activity rather than rating, because even if I don't use it, other people might, and then threads will end up necroing just because they were popular back in the day.
