We have an Australian thread where we constantly bash Abbot.

And yet I didn't google president Obama.
Guess I must be an even smaller single white male minority.
Gosh I hope my feelings don't get hurt.

Yeah, but when I say I voted in a rural liberal for my shire, Australians understand.
So I don't really stick with the bashing.
I'm a Nationalist.
My entire voting life so far has been the equivalent of getting a higher debt ceiling in return for killing obamacare.

Dog piling happens because a person posts a view point that the majority disagrees with. Often they post things that are actually, not relatively, incorrect.

I don't see how this is a issue or how it could be solved if it was a issue.

Edit: Unless you want to institute a quota on how many people can talk to other people at once.

Tahujdt, this is a predominantly liberal forum. Political discussions will lean to the left. That probably isn't going to change. Also, what goes on is less "conservative-bashing" and more lighthearted jokes.

It's not like you're forced to participate in (or even read, though derails do happen in other threads) political discussions. Just skim through them until you reach the end or something. Alternatively, you can participate in political discussions. It's up to you, but I doubt that the entire forum is going to change. Just stay out of political and news threads and you should be fine, other than the occasional emotion thread derail.

But yes, I do agree that people go a bit far sometimes; insults aren't okay. It's possible that people will become more tolerant, but for now I recommend that you stay out of political threads unless you feel like arguing with most of the board.

It's possible that you're not the only person who thinks that this is an issue, in which case something should probably be done. As a left-winger, I have absolutely no idea what it's like to be a conservative on this forum, so while I don't see an issue that doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't one.

Yeah, I don't think the dogpiling ever happens because they want to shut the other side out. There's just a lot of people who want to have their say. What's worse anyway is when people will fall to personal attacks just because they can't change the other person's opinion.

While I'm primarily left leaning, I actually find I get along better with non-bigoted/sane conservatives (Usually not the kind you hear about in the states, lots of crazy far right wingers here .x) than far left wing people thanks to me being heavily into gun ownership (Though not handguns, rifles yes, handguns no) and a few other things I like that seem to line up with that sort of person.

Even so most people dogpile on conservatives since the kind most people know are the bible thumping defense of marriage and gender role enforcing, climate change denying one made fun of in LCS. You know, bible belt republicans.

There's a lot of posturing on this forum and I'm kinda tired of it too.

There's a big difference between "debating" and "proving yourself to be right" and I feel a lot of people don't realize this.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I definitely agree, and it's really not limited to bay12 either.

It'd be great to have a more diverse discussion environment, since this forum does seem so dominantly left-leaning. It really would be a shame if people felt that expressing their views would be met with hostility, and not join in as a result. The Ukraine thread is a good example of this hostility, and it's really sucks to see how some of the Russian posters are getting driven away by the patronizing attitudes and hostility that's plagued it lately. Shit, I just got passive aggressive. Er.

I occasionally have conservative thoughts (that are kept in check by frequent juice eyeball-injections), but really find the division artificial and unnecessarily polarizing. And yeah, it's unfortunately quite natural to get dragged into an extended argument where both sides are really just trying to confirm their own thoughts, which happens to all of us sometimes I think.

The difference between fist fighting and debating for most people is the medium. Hell, there's a really common problem of the whole "just because you won doesn't mean you're right" thing.

I have a feeling I'd be considered one of the dogpilers, at least, even though I don't identify myself as anything and spend more time raging at "liberals" outside of this board than I do "conservatives" in it.

I think defining oneself by political affiliation is dangerous territory, since it encourages identity-based-belief over reality-based-belief, but thankfully that doesn't seem to be as big a problem among the liberals here as it is in other liberal bastions I've visited. The conservatives here, well... some of them have been okay.

But I can not stand dishonest, sloppy, and poorly reasons arguments and the sorts of bullshit that get trotted out here sometimes is infuriating, no matter which side it happens on. On bay12, though, it tends that when the conservatives make such terrible arguments do it a lot louder and more vociferously - presumably because they see themselves as a minority, and start the conversation on the defensive and looking for a fight to justify their own position, no matter how stupid the logic they use is, because convincing others isn't the point. I see the same behaviour in liberals that speak up on more conservative forums, and it's bullshit either way.

So eh, maybe I'm one of the bad guys here.

I disagree. When someone who agrees with the majority of the posters post something badly researched, snarky or otherwise unconstructive, most poster let them alone rather than correcting them (See: Half of Mict's posts on the Ukraine thread for example).

Mict has the marvelous strategy of saying his stupidest things mostly in response to people saying even stupider things.

There's still a reason he's on my shortlist of "people to ignore because arguing with them is an exercise in stupidity" as a side effect of that thread, along with gogis.

-snip-
I realize that. I was more saying that people here usually don't realize that are those with alternate views here who don't like defending themselves for of seeming like a giant prick.

At least, I hope that's what I was saying.
