((Alright, the journal-style of writing is really getting quite cumbersome to write in, and I can't imagine reading it is much better. So, let's abandon it, shall we?))

You're about 5'10", with a fairly wiry build. Your face is plain, but you have blue eyes. Your hair is a dark brown, almost black. You're also 19 years old; you had recently finished high school, and you were planning on going to college soon.
You jump off of the turtle [5-3] and fall directly on the ground. Quickly recovering, you strike what you hope is an epic pose. You hear the person just barely stopping himself from laughing.
Speaking of which, you're now able to get a good look at him. He stands about a head taller than you, and holds a large blade, coming up almost to his neck, covered in runes that seem to glow faintly. At his waist you see another, much more sensibly sized long blade. He's clad in ornate armor that conceals his form and face completely. It looks worn with age and battle. You initiate conversation via the book.
"How old are you?"
"An odd question, if I do say so myself. However, one I'll humor regardless. If I have not lost track of the times, I am about 246 years of age. Now, do you wish to pass into the Proving Grounds of the Vagabond?"

You tap your collar, and ask him what The Proving Grounds of the Vagabond.
"You don't know what the Proving Grounds are?! You ARE from Earth, right?"
You nod.
"Is that lizard daft? Well, the Proving Grounds is a set of caverns and ruins that the great Goddess has tasked me with remaking it into a test of strength and bravery for those who travel here from Earth. If you wish to enter and find your way and mission, you'll first have to best me in a spar.
He drops his large blade on the ground and draws his smaller one.
"Shall we? Or do you have more questions?"

You give a quick bow, or rather, try to. The shield makes it rather difficult. You take a stance you remember learning at one point, and the knight charges. [2+1] He stumbles mid-charge, opening his defenses. Making a snap decision based more on instinct than skill, you bring your blade up and slash at the knight. [10-2+3] You manage to connect, if barely. You can tell the strike did no real damage, but the knight praises it anyways.
"Good. Let's see if you can pull it off again!"
You could take the offensive and try and attack him first, you could try to wait until he opens his guard again and try to weather the incoming attacks, or you could use some magic to aid the fight.

Lets try magic. Drop sword, cast burning hand. As he is distracted and in pain, pick sword back up

You try to hold your ground and block his strikes as they come. [8+1] [6-3 Defense] He hits you with a powerful blow, causing you to stagger back. Even your massive shield didn't do much to mitigate the blow. You get an idea, though, and act on it.
You throw your sword to the ground, and the knight looks surprised (At least, as surprised as one can look in full heavy armor). During his moment of confusion, you charge forwards, cast Burning Hand, and throw a punch at his face. [17-1] [1+5 Burning Hand] The blow connects, and you hear a sharp searing sound. The knight cries out in pain. The punch didn't do anything, you're sure of that, but the spell seemed to pass through his armor with little trouble.
You scramble to pick up your sword again before he strikes [1-3] and fail miserably. You fall on the ground, blade out of your reach. The knight stands over you, and holds his sword to your throat.
"The spar is over. You are not worthy of entering. Leave. Go to the town to the west and train there. Come back when you're more capable. Attempt to continue the fight, and I will slay you where you stand."
