I would place accents on events of this priority.

1. The Catching of or Deaths of Pokémon.
2. Important Events, such as Team Rocket or Rival Battles
3. Status Effects that almost kill you. Poison... Poison!!!
4. Some Random Battles of note. Not all of them, but enough that we remember that there are way too many trainers out for blood.
5. Other side quips akin to you feeling sad about mother, or the totally not drunk old man who wants tea in Viridian.
6. Acquisition of interesting items

Before I leave, OAK asks me to pick up a delivery for him. I'm about done with this place, and don't feel like coming right back after a brief jaunt outside fo town, but he says he'll make it worth my while, so...

And that's how I find myself at the edge of town, staring at the long grass. You see, I've run into a slight problem. Anything I encounter between here and the next town over counts against the League Rules for catching pokemon - and I have no spare pokeballs. There's a good chance I'm going to "lose" my first pokemon right here, simply by virtue of the fact that no one in this town has a single empty pokeball to their name, except maybe OAK, and he's not sharing if he does.

Welp, there's nothing for it. I dash into the grass...

And I'm through! I'm officially outside of town, for the first time in my life! Hell yeah! No encounter, even. Now all I've got to... woah, okay, there's a lot more grass between here and the next town, isn't there? There's a road, but it seems to be littered with... sheer drops? What the hell? I can't even climb this ledges, they're way to sheer.

I dash around one, flirting briefly with the long grass, and I'm through. I do it again with the next one - still no encounter! I might actually pull this off.

And then the path ends in a sea of grass between trees, and before I can even curse my luck, a pidgey has descended from one of them to beat it's wings against my ears.

NOVLAIKE, go!
Squirtle, Squirtle!
X_X

Well, that was over quickly. Squirtle is still in good shape, but the Pidgey is dead and this route is forever locked off to me. At least I'm a bit closer to - ACK. Rattata, biting my ankles! Argh!

NOVLAIKE, go!
Squirtle, Squirtle!
X_X

... okay, so I'm beginning to understand why OAK said it would be dangerous for me to go out. Squirtle is pretty banged up after that last fight - for a rodent, that rattata did a good deal of damage. And this route is forever locked off to me now, so... for a moment, I consider turning around and going home. Running back to mom, letting her nurse our wounds. But no - I'm going to push on. I pull the potion out of my back, and gently pour it over NOVLAIKE's wounds. He smiles at me and burbles a bit, blowing bubbles of happiness in response, and I smile in turn.

No, I don't need to run home to mommy anymore. We can do this. I notice NOVLAIKE is looking a bit tougher already, too - just beating up the bird and rat seems to have given him a boost in confidence. And actually... those bubbles he's blowing...

Ah, god, Rattata!
*blows bubbles*
*tries to whip squirtle with tail repeatedly*
*blows even more bubbles*
X_X

A new attack! Amazing!

And with that, I'm through the grass, and I've entered VIRIDIAN CITY... First things first. Let's buy some balls!

... the shop owner has given me the package for Oak, but every time I ask about actually buying things, here, in this store, he just smiles and tilts his head and thanks me for taking the time to deliver the package. Right. Looks like it is time to head back to Pallete Town, then.

I skip most of the grass by jumping off those ledges the road goes over, but I still end up fighting off both a bird and a rat before getting back.

Oh, EAEF,XU! How is my old pokemon?*
Holding together, OAK. He's a pretty tough little guy, isn't he? Yes he is.
*blows bubbles*
Well, it seems to be growing more attached to you. You must be talented as a POKeMON TRAINER.*
Anyway, I got your package. Here.
Ah! It's the custom POKe BaLL! I had it on order. Thank you!*
... Wait a minute, you were ordering a singular pokeball? What's so special about it?
Well, it-
Gramps!*
I almost forgot! What did you call me for?*
!*
Oh, Right! I have a request for you two!*
I just did a request for you - can't I just have my reward and be on my-
On the desk there is my invention, the POKeDEX! It's a high tech encyclopedia!*
EAEF, XU and BAIB. Take these with you.
Uh, thanks?
What do I need one of these stupid things for?
It records data on pokemon you've encountered, but you can't know everything until you've caught the pokemon yourself!*
About that, I was wondering...
So, here are some tools for catching wild POKeMON!*
Sweet!
Yes! I'm gonna catch the strongest pokemon, just you wait XU-the-loser!
To make a complete guide on all the pokemon in the world... that was my dream! But I'm too old. I can't get the job done. So I want you two to fill in for me! Get moving, you two!
I don't understand - aren't we supposed to limit the pokemon we catch or risk losing our status as LEAGUE TRAINERS?
...
I'm sure you'll figure something out, kids!
This is a great undertaking in POKeMON history!*
Alright Gramps, leave it to me! EAEF, XU, I hate to say it, but you won't be neccesary for this!* I'm gonna go get a map from my sister and tell her not to lend you one, hahaha! Don't even bother trying to come around to my place after this!
*runs out*
... Professor, you've been studying Pokemon your entire life, right?
That's right, Xu!
I've noticed that you only seem to have entries in here for the three on the table, and the rattatas and pidgeys just outside town...
Ah, yes! Well, you'd better get started! Off with you, then!
Pokemon around the world wait for you, EAEF, XU!*

I headed over to see BAIBS sister, Daisy, and she happily gave me a town map, on account of she likes me more than she likes her jerk of a brother. Then fought my back to Viridian, a second time. Okay, so, a bit of a false start there for a bit - but now, for real, my journey was finally beginning. First stop: Check out this pokemon center thing and see if they can't help out my poor squirtle, since I'm all out of potions and he's looking a bit rough around the edges... and then... well, who knows where I'll go next. The entire world is my cloyster - I can anywhere!

Okay, so - should I load up on potions, antidotes, and pokeballs? Should I head west of town and try to catch something on Route 22? Should I try to get a geezer to teach me how to catch pokemon? The choice is yours!

Personally, I'd say you can catch a pokemon in this first route, as only now can you get one.

Stock up, head west.

Healing my squirtle, I then headed to the pokemart and picked up a dozen pokeballs, some potions, and an antidote - just in case. Then, deciding to see what was on route 22, I headed west. After all, that was the way to the Pokemon League Headquarters, right? No better direction to go than straight to the end!

Stepping into the tall grass, I encountered... a baby Mankey, just level 2, angrily (if ineffectively) throwing itself against me! Ah, my first conquest!

There was only a slight problem - the poor little thing probably wouldn't survive a single hit, so I was going to have to get lucky.

The first pokeball was thrown... and the Mankey broke out. A second, then a third, then a fourth... finally, on the fifth throw, the Pokeball sealed itself, and the Mankey was mine. My darling ZIHUE.

Checking the details on my Pokedex, it seemed like this little ball of fury was actually calm for a Mankey. Huh!

Still, my first catch - the first pokemon I'd truly earned. I was proud.

I decided it was time to take him out for a spin and see what he could do.

*A wild Mankey appears!*
Go, ZIHUE!
*screeches in fury*
*swipes with anger*
Uh... uh oh. Which of you... uh... which of you guys is...
*swipes in anger*
*swipes in anger*
Oh god, mine is the one that's getting it's ass kicked, isn't it? ZIHUE, come back! NOVLAIKE, go!
Squirtle!
X_X

My poor little mankey was beaten and bruised. This wasn't good at all. I was going to have to get NOVLAIKE to show him the ropes of battling. It was time... time for a training montage!

*uses tackle*  I want to be the very best,
*uses scratch* Like no one ever was.
*jumps off a ledge* To catch them is my real test,
*hesitates and then follows* To train them is my cause.
*punches at the withdrawn NOVLAIKE* I will travel across the land,
*scratches a pidgey to death* Searching far and wide.
*jumps into the air, lands behind a rattata, and lowkicks it into oblivion* Teach Pokemon to understand
*AWESOME POSE!* The power that's inside

Great job, guys! Now let's just make sure I can tell you apart from all the other Mankeys, and...
Mank-eeeeeey!

Note to self: This is, according to my Pokedex's observations, the suckiest Mankey ever.

So, moving forward, should I - train the Mankey some more, head further west, or head north?

Yep. That is one bad Mankey. On the bright side however, you now have a new fodder for Brock's Gym. All it has to do, is defeat Onix, and then we never have to see it again. Which is sad, but it is a part of life. We will love you while we have you Zihuehue.

However, you are in no condition to go fight the rival yet, and I imagine training montages will get tiring after a while, Continue on the path to Pewter City!

Well, with my newly leveled Mankey, it was finally time to take on the local gym!

Of course, I was immediately interrupted.

Ah! So you're working on your pokedex!*
Wait... didn't OAK just invent this thing? How do you know what it is?
What's that? You don't know how to catch a pokemon!?
...what? Now, I do! I've got a Mankey right here and-
Don't worry, I'll show you! Go, Weedle!
Weeee!
Back in your ball, Weedle! And that's how it's done!
I'm not so sure...
I know what you need! A TV!
...
I'm going now.

After escaping from the "helpful" old man and dumping his gift behind some nearby bushes, I headed to the gym, only to find out the door was locked. Apparently it's always locked, and no one even knows who the Gym Leader is.

Well... that's... special. I'm pretty sure that violates like all the League Rules for being a Gym Leader... but whatever. I can't let that slow me down. Apparently the next place with a badge is north of here in Pweter City, on the other side of Viridian Forest.

On the way there...
Rrrrr?
Yes! New pokemon! Go, ZIHUE, menace the rat while I dig out some pokeballs!
*Lv.5 Rattata was caught!*
Welcome to the party, LZDIO!
Taaa?

Weeeeee?
Go, ZIHUE!
*gets poisoned*
X_X
CRAP!

I'm not even to the woods yet, and I've already got a problem. 14hp to get back to the pokecenter, though...
Don't worry, Zihue! You're gonna make it! Just hold in there!
Mankey!? Mank...key?

I pass the old weedle man with 7hp left...
Mank... mank... key...
Come on, just a little further...

We make it to the pokecenter doors with 2hp left...
...
No, no, no, no, come on come on come on...

oh thank goodness, stepping inside resets the 4 step timer! A step from the counter, his HP ticks down to one...

HEAL THIS POKEMON IMMEDIATELY!
[staff] Sir, we're happy to help you, just...
HEAL!

ZIHUE lives!

I mean yeah, sure, technically I had an antidote, but I only bought one - I have no more cash, and I'm going to need it to get through the forest! I didn't expect to be poisoned before I even got there. If that forest has more poison pokemon inside... uh oh. One antidote might not actually be enough...

*Note: After writing this and needing to do pictures, I realized I forgot to get a screencap of the weedle, so I spent a while "grinding" to encounter another one, bringing ZIHUE up to lv11 and NOVLAIKE up to lv12. Then I realized I still needed a screencap of the old man, and that I'd accidently made an old save in the city so I could just load that up to get it. >_< ... I'm keeping the extra levels though, I earned them fair and square!
