Dwarves like the cold. If it seriously bothers you that you are going to need to cast a few extra spells (on top the spells you will need to cast for the other racial cities you pick up) just go with them.

I never like Dwarves... NEVER!

Also air is cold not water... I believe

It's a valid point!  A water mage (air mage actually) shouldn't have a massive disadvantage with races other than dwarves.  Someone who wants to play dwarves shouldn't have to have air magic or be severely penalized.

It sounds like there's a very reasonable solution, though: the spells which make a race enjoy your sphere's climate.  An air-dwarf player won't have to cast that on dwarven cities, which sounds like a small but significant bonus, but having a variety of races will probably be important.  That means that even if your "main" race "matches" your magic type, there's still terraforming to do.

It's obviously too early to analyze the balance of this, but I see no reason to think that a water mage will have trouble leading orcs.  It's possible, though.

No actually they just released a statement that they are changing it. From now on you can only play as fire orcs, air dwarves, earth goblins, ect. They also removed all other spells in the game other then class ones and removed the differences between the races.

Honestly the "Like that terrain" spell feels more like a spell made for cities you take over (or convince to join you) then it does for your main race.

Especially given how the previous Age of Wonders games went.

Well, luckily for everyone else, it's not.

We've literally seen that you can cast it on your starting race. It's in the warlord video.

Yes I am aware of that

I checked the videos. Domain spells are rather cost restrictive. If they had low or non-existant upkeep, you would be right.

You are not going to be casting them like that Warlord video... OUCH! Well unless the game is on easy.

Piff, if you are so bad at making mana, maybe you should be playing on easy.

Constant mana drain is not good, this might actually be a real hurdle to playing certain combinations.  It's still too early to tell, though.  Maybe a fire mage has trouble keeping dwarves happy, but has some spells which synergize particularly well with their traits.  Like they have golems which are immune to fire so you can throw fireballs into melee, just theorizing.  I guess what I'm saying is balance is complicated.  Just because some mage/race combinations have a harder time getting the climate right doesn't necessarily mean they're bad combinations.  It's something to acknowledge, though.

It's something to be acknowledged, but calling a minor happiness penalty a "huge penalty" is being unreasonable.

Edit: And acting like it makes the game unplayable any other way.

It might mean that optimally if you want to play odd magic combinations you will have to take more then one magic specialization with one of them being your race's specialty magic.

If you only want to play 100% optimally I doubt it will work like that. undoubtedly the game won't be perfectly balanced, but the whole terrain thing doesn't actually matter enough that it's going to be more then a small factor in what is and is not strong. Simply put, it's ridiculous to say it make it much harder or impossible to play certain combinations.
